Can anyone clarify the details of Gilbert's contract? The yahoo report states he has 4 years and $60m remaining, yet his original deal was what? 6 years, $110-120m? Was it front-loaded, or did it include a huge signing bonus in the first year?

I don't hold out any hopes, but if it turns out Gilbert is also not on as much money as everyone thinks, then this deal looks even better for Orlando. More likely is that Shamsports have it right, though.

If Melo is going to stay this year, Denver should be on the phone ASAP. Nash is IDEAL for that team, Billups is basically worthless at this point.

Imagine Nash with Melo, JR, K-Mart, Nene, Lawson and Harrington. That offense would be insane and could pose a legitamate threat to the Lakers.

Melo is gone either this season or next though. The Suns will want to put Nash in a position to win titles, and the Nuggets are not going to win anything in the next couple years with Melo out.

If anything, the Magic should have been pushing for Nash instead. Now that would be a scary team.

The financial ramifications of this trade are obviously ugly for Orlando, but I think the trade does make them better. And I say this as someone who absolutely despises Hedo Turkoglu.

So why didn't they just keep Carter, not give up a 1st + Pietrus + Gortat, and trade bad contract fillers and have Phoenix give up a useful asset + Hedo to Orlando to liquidate his contract?

Hedo was a bad contract.

I know Orlando looks better and all, but I seriously think they could have done better with Vince Carter's near expiring contract.

I should also add that I really like a Gil for Shard swap from Washington's standpoint as that team desperately needs a 3. Nick Young continues to prove himself as a legit offensive threat and I think he'd easily be able to step in for Arenas. Meanwhile the Wizards can move Hinrich to the bench behind Wall and Young and actually start a legit SF at the 3 spot in Lewis while Howard collects his paycheck from the bench. Yeah they take on Shard's money but amazingly enough they only have to pay him for three years (two and a half if they buy him out) as opposed to four for Gilbert. This is a no-brainer if you're Washington.

I'm surprised you think so highly of Shard. Most Magic fans feel he's done. But I have always commented on my frustration with how Stan has made him into a spot up jump shooter

Rashard Lewis gets a bad rap for underperforming in comparison to his contract, but the simple truth (IMO anyway) is that Orlando misused him in trying to play the guy at the 4 where he simply does not belong. I think he'd do much better at the SF position which is where he made a living in Seattle and where he'll likely end up starting in Washington.
