My contact in KC was not able to confirm a deal has been made with Greinke, either, so don't know what else to say at this point.

Hope to wake up tomorrow with something. It would be an awesome way to makeup for the Bucks loss and the potential ending of the Packers season tomorrow.

I don't have a problem with the package given up, but it will be interesting to see what happens with Prince. His presence dictates future directions IMO.

Edited for wording.

I amma gonna go to sleep. bye people, nice posting here for the first time in a few months.

You are very anti believing this rumor and fighting it every step of the way. What gives?

I base my opinions on facts. So far, it is just some random blog writer creating a rumor. Nothing new.

Ok, then get your facts straight. Breen isn't a "random blog writer" by any means. If you follow the Brewers closely, and ever head over to JSOnline and take your eyes for a vacation other than anything written by Tom H...then you'd be familiar with him.

And the fact is that in Breen's history blogging/reporting, he has never once just thrown something out there. He has never created a rumor, or tried to get his name out there.

These are the facts.

I'll just say that if he's right he's got a hell of a scoop since nobody else seems to have any idea what's going on.

Technically, Jim Breen is not MJS.

I just want somebody independent of Breen or Wagner to confirm any of this is even happening. So far everything is tied back to those two.

Nothing new so far.

Haudricourt wrote:Two reports surfaced Saturday night saying the Brewers had worked out a deal with Kansas City to acquire right-hander Zack Greinke. After traveling all day, I was unable to get these reports confirmed from either the Milwaukee or KC end late in the evening, so I can't endorse them or disclaim them.

None of the national outlets had any news Saturday night about this deal, and usually blockbuster moves leak out to them. I couldn't get anyone with the Brewers to return messages, which could mean that they weren't ready to say anything yet or merely didn't get the messages late on Saturday night. So, again, I couldn't confirm these reports.

A report on the "Bernie's Crew" fan blog, which posts on the JS web site, said the Brewers are getting Greinke for shortstop Alcides Escobar, centerfielder Lorenzo Cain and pitching prospect Jeremy Jeffress.

That report said the Brewers also would get shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt to take over for Escobar as the starter.

A later report on OnMilwaukee.com had the Brewers sending Escobar, Cain and pitching prospects Jake Odorizzi and Jeffress to the Royals for Greinke. That report said the Brewers would get "another major league player" in the deal but didn't say who it would be.

Greinke has two years remaining on his contract before he can be a free agent, paying him $13.5 million in each of the next two seasons. Betancourt has a $4 million salary in 2011 and a club option for $6 million in 2012 with a $2 million buyout.

Escobar was considered the Brewers’ shortstop for years to come when installed as a rookie starter in 2010. Cain played very well as the starting centerfielder over the final six weeks of the season and was the favorite to win that job next season.

Odorizzi is considered the top pitching prospect in the organization after a brilliant season at Class A Wisconsin. Jeffress, a first-round draft pick in 2006, was impressive out of the Brewers’ bullpen in September and has one of the best fastballs in the game.

A report surfaced in recent days that Greinke had changed agents and wanted to be traded as soon as possible to get out of KC, and would entertain deals even to teams on his no-trade list. The Brewers reportedly were on that list.

Greinke, 27, has been considered the top pitcher available via trade this winter. In seven seasons with the Royals, he is 60-67 with a 3.82 ERA in 210 games (169 starts). He went 10-14 with a 4.17 ERA in 33 games in 2010.

Greinke’s big year came in 2009, when he went 16-8 with a 2.16 ERA, with 242 strikeouts in 229 1/3 innings. Greinke was honored with the American League Cy Young Award that season.

As I have reported on this blog before, the Brewers took earlier runs at Greinke without success, so we know they have had serious interest. If they trade all of those top prospects for him, it means they're going for it next year and not worrying about the future. With Prince Fielder probably only around one more year, that might make sense.

So, I'll get back on this Sunday and try to see if there's any truth to these reports. Sounds like Greinke has been trying to force the Royals' hand on this, so we'll see if the Brewers jumped in and took advantage.

@native_astro It just got harder, I tell you that. Melvin has picked up Marcum & Greinke, impressive. But Prince contract issue looms.

@ny2lasports Yes, but he plays shortstop like he's handcuffed. Have to like Melvin getting Marcum & Greinke, great aggressive moves.

It would be funny if Wagner's source is Jim Breen and Jim Breen's source is Andrew Wagner.

What?! We were contendors with Sabathia/Sheets/no one. Give me Greinke/Gallardo/Marcum/Wolf/________ over that playoff rotation ANYDAY. Sign Renteria as a stop gap at SS. Move Gamel to the outfield. Team's set.

Do you think we're in the NL East?

Don't want to sidetrack this thread/rumor with a debate on something so trivial, but they weren't WS contenders with CC and Sheets. They made the playoffs on the last game of the year and won 1 game in the divisional. I think we have our definitions of WS contenders off. Central division, yes.

LULZ. It's baseball. Everyone in the playoffs is a contender.

If Odorizzi is included, I only like this deal if an extension gets worked out. Yeah, we did upgrade our rotation big time with Marcum/Greinke, but we also traded five of our top prospects and this trade pretty much decimates our system. Don't know that many guys going out is worth it for two years of upgraded pitching, only one with Prince.

Melvin just raped Moore without lube. It sucks losing Cain, but you make that trade every time.
