Why Anthony Randolph or Jason Thompson

Post#1 » by hunterxaz » Sun Dec 19, 2010 4:28 pm

Seeing a lot of hype surrounding these guys and bringing them to Phoenix. Honestly, I can't really see their upsides. Their stats aren't that great, and from what I've seen of them during playing, they're not that dominant.

Most of you guys wanted Earl Clark, so I question the general judgment of the board by and large here. So, let me know, why should we trade Lopez + others to bring in AR and Jason Thompson?

Their cheap, young PF options, and they have plenty of upside. It usually takes a big man 2-4 years to develop at the pro level.

I don't think anyone is suggesting we trade Lopez for either of them though... the only way that happens is if we package him with a wing and get a high quality PF in return, i.e. Josh Smith.

AR and JT can be had for the cheap... I don't think it would take much more than a draft pick to acquire them.

Agreed

I don't see how trading for AR / JT or any other NBA player sitting on the bench is going to make significant changes to the Suns. Everyone always talks about a team needing the Big 3 (Garnett,Pierce, Allen or Duncan,Parker,Ginobli). We have the Big 1 (Nash) and Hill or VC maybe the Big 2. We don't have a Big 3. If anyone can name a scrub bench player who can be or has been turned into one then go ahead and post it.

People need to think Larry Nance and Charles Barkley type trades if we are going to really impact the makeup of this team. Right now I think we should stand pat. There will be a few interesting areas to watch:

1) The battle for the starting center spot - Lopez will get the first crack at it but Gortat is clearly the better defender. All we need is one of the two to step up in a major way (16 pts, 10 boards, 2 blks) and the team significantly improves.

2) The starting PF spot - Frye has stepped up since Baron and Lopez have been paired beside him. For December his numbers in 33mins are 13.9 pts, 8rbs, 1.6blk, 0.9stl. Not superstar numbers but they put him in the league of Brand and Jamison. While Warrick is prolific offensively he sucks on defense ... period. With either Gortat or Lopez covering the opposing center they should mask his lack of defense and his offensive prowess makes him an adequate backup PF.

3) Log jam at wings - Pietrus, JChill, Hill, Duds, and VC is still one too many. Childress's career average PER is 16.1; we should hold on to him until he recovers. If anything we should look to move Pietrus to solidify a 10 man rotation and keep every one happy Trade him for a pick or rookie combo guard (PG/SG). Maybe bring Janning back.

Nash, Hill, and VC are still top 10 at their respective positions. Question is will Frye, Lopez, and/or Gortat step up and push the Suns back to a level of respectability? If not build a collection of 1st round picks and trade up for a stud PF/C in the draft or use them to acquire one via trade.

AR has upside but I don't think he can help us this season. JT can help us this season. He's big, mobile enough to PnR and rebounds. He isn't going to come in and dominant but he will get the system going by being that PnR guy Nash needs.

I liked Kerrsed's trade that brought us AR+Smith, without giving up VC (could still trade him for value, possibly Murphy.... Expiring for expiring). But I am still on giving up VC+Warrick+orlando pick to try to get Zack Randolph. Like J. Mack has mentioned, we need someone who can play without Nash on the court, as well as with him, Someone who doesnt need Nash to score, but can excel with him (pick and roll),Zack Randolph fits that bill. Has a post game... needs to be double teamed.... rebounds like a mad man... along with Gortat or Lopez would be a big starting front court.... could slide to the C. when Frye comes in and would be the post threat that allows our bombers to bomb away, and would keep a couple misses alive down low. He would be a peice that would make us LEGIT!!!! RIGHT!!!! NOW!!!! Dont care that people dont like him, he would be playing for a contract. A Gortat Z. Randolph front court competes with the lakers and spurs.

I'd take JT if we could get him cheap. Not sure what his true potential is.

Wouldn't touch AR, I don't think he has the potential to be a very good PF. Average maybe, but not elite.

Suns fan base loves elite PF. I'd like to get a young PF with elite potential but no names come to mind that we would have a chance to get. I'd also take an veteran elite PF like Zach Randolph. Yeah, I'm aware of the negatives that come with him, but at the end of the day he performs.

People want AR because with Clark gone the Suns are in desperate need of a super talented basketball player with rocks for brains to sit on the bench.

Thompson is wanted because he is an average NBA big that has career journeyman written all over him, and that's still better than what the Suns have at PF.

I wouldn't give anything significant for either guy.

Thompson is a legitimate PF body, who's athletic, young, and cheap. In his limited time, he's put up very respectable numbers. In a system such as ours, he'll flourish. Oh, and he doesn't seem to be a primadonna or attention whore. Haven't heard a peep out of him throughout this whole logjam/shuffle situation in Sacramento.

Anthony Randolph is raw with potential. Athletic and very young. I have much less interest in him but its easy to see why someone would.

I don't think anyone's saying ship Lopez out to get one of them, most (including me) think a future 1st for one of those 2 is worth it...Offer up the lower pick out of the 2x 2011 1st rounders that we have

Anthony Randolph is a more extreme Earl Clark in every which way...

Thompson on the other hand would be nice.

Anthony Randolph is hot garbage. I'd trade him to you for the guy selling hot dogs. The only problem is we have to find a 3rd team to make the salaries work.

I'll tell you why Anthony Randolph...

because he can be had for CHEAP...

the potential is still there, his biggest negative trait as a player is that he is STUBBORN and IMMATURE.

Watch some of his highlights when he was on the Warriors... once he GETS IT.... he will be a STUD.

On the KNICKS.... he is playing DUMB when he is ON... he also makes mistakes because he is feeling extra pressure from D'antoni.... he makes a mistake and D'Antoni yanks him out.... and not to mention Stoudemire plays his position, Randolph doesnt get to play his game..

If you can get him for A mid-to-late First Round pick... then its a good deal.

Correction. AR can be had on the cheap and for very good reason. If you gave the Knicks a lotto protected 1st for him, they'd bite on that.

JT? Not so much. I don't think there is a realistic piece the Suns would part with that the Kings would accept for him. I don't see a trade happening between the Kings and Suns anytime soon involving Jason Thompson.

Yeah agreed we'd have to pay way more for Thompson than for AR. AR hasn't proven anything in the NBA, Thompson has proven that he can be a solid starter.

AR is useless as a rock but then again people use rocks for building walls and throwing at people so i'll just say he's dumb, just watch a NYK game when he's playing and you'll see why. The Suns should try and get Kevin Love and maybe try and convince T'Wolves to take J Chill in return

Nash/Dragic
VC/Pietrus
Hill/Dudley
Frye/Warrick
Gortat/Lopez

Bench:
Childress
Barron
Siler
Lawal

We are too deep. We need a 3 for 1 trade if we are serious about another move. Until then, I LOVE this lineup. Suns play efficient basketball, and everyone we picked up is efficient, minus Pietrus' streakiness tendencies. We upgraded defensively, and I LOVE Gortat. I was already growing bored with this team and this sparked it right back into the interesting category.

VC, Pietrus, Lopez, Warrick, both picks for Al Horford, Jamal crawford and Josh Smith

Nash/Dragic
Crawford/Childress
Hill/Dudley
Horford/Smith
Frye/Gortat/Barron

That is a ridiculously defensive second unit.

I thought about Hawks actually... with Josh Smith to the Suns..

But NO WAY, they part with Horford + Josh Smith.... and start Warrick at PF... NO WAY.

I would like Crawford coming off the bench.... as SG.

Pass on Crawford. That guy's a cocky cancerous punk.

I'll take Smith. Didn't they extend Horford?
