Point Guard options

Washington executive Ernie Grunfeld says the team will look to add another point guard.

"We'll probably look to bring in someone to back him up," Grunfeld said. "Because of John's injury situation and the trade, we'll probably have to bring in somebody else. There's nothing structural [with Wall]. But until the pain subsides, we're not going to rush him back, that's for sure."

Lester makes the most sense because we need a short term fix and he knows the system.

On the other hand, Lester is absolutely NOT a PG by any stretch of the imagination. Without a ball handler like Gil at the 2, we need our PG to run the offense. Young, Lewis and McGee are heavily dependent on a PG getting them the ball where they need it. Only Blatche and Howard can play effectively with a non-PG running the offense.

It Wall's injury is expected to last more than a few games, it might be wise for EG to scrounge the D-Leagues for a pure PG.

I was thinking of starting the same thread! I'd personally prefer someone new (we've lived the Lester Hudson experience already...)

How about Kyle Weaver? Good defender, can shoot the 3, plays PG and SG (which makes him more useful post Wall's return) and has size at 6'6". Averaging 19.6ppg/6.3rpg/3.6apg/1.4spg/1.6bpg on 50% shooting (starting as a SG with Curtis Stinson at the point) for Iowa.

I think this is a really good opportunity for us to find and groom Kirks eventual replacement. Wall has had some health problems since HS, so nailing-down a quality back-up to be with us beyond this season is important.

I would rather Ernie take-on a 4-year player like Scottie Reynolds.

There are a couple of other D-League guys who might fit the bill: Curtis Stinson and others.

as much love as hometown favorite scottie reynolds gets, i'm not sure he's a pg either. he's got "randy foye" written all over him. it's a shame the warriors signed jeremy lin. he would have been a pretty good signing.

I thought of Lin too. He's not doing much in Golden State. He's played just 135 minutes this season and shot tragically bad. I wonder if we could (or should) trade a future 2nd rounder for him.

I've never been much of a Hudson fan, although having him for the short term makes sense. And once Wall is healthy, having a combo guard like Hudson as our 5th guard also makes sense. I'd forgotten about Aaron Miles and would like to see the team at least bring him in.

I believe that OKC has the rights to Weaver or they are keeping tabs on him through their D-League team. Not sure if we could nab him, he fits the bill.

Lester really isn't much of a PG, don't see how he helps us. Unless there's a reasonably priced vet backup we're really better of finding some d-league talent and grooming him as backup PG that could potentially take over for Hinrich when his contract is up.

Don't forget that we don't have a back up for the 2 either... I'd sign Lester AND a pg on a 10 day. If only we could cut Yi to make it happen.

as entertaining as he is, that's the one guy I would be really upset about
acquiring.

Just to be clear, my Boykins comment was tongue in cheek.

Crittenton actually makes a fair amount of sense if it weren't for that one blemish on his record.

Do you really see Martin as a 2? Seems more 3ish to me. Can he guard twos? Can he score efficiently enough to justify him at the 2?

Martin is actually a bit shorter than Nick Young. I don't think he has the ball handling skills of a SG on offense, but he can certainly guard opposing SG's. I don't think his inadequacies at SG are that much of an issue. He's a good enough stopgap until Wall gets healthy and Kent can slide over and handle the SG minutes that Nick doesn't take.
