You could tell from his inteviews that he isn't going to go out like this. I'm not certain if he will play for the Rockets in the future. Don't be surprised if the Heat look at him this summer. Btw, does anyone know that once the Rox take that injury exception which they filed today for Yao at 5.7mill, that if they trade him maybe in a few weeks, is he worth the 17mil expiring contract in a trade or is he only worth 5.7mil? Just curious. Thanks.

Yao's salary value in a trade would still be $17mil.

the fact that they're seeking an injury exception means they're still hoping yao can get better

Not really. They need to file for this exception because they only have 45 days from the date of this season ending disclosure to use the exception should they decide to use it. They have 45 days from that date to find a free agent unless they decide to trade Yao means they use the value of his 17mil contract and not trade exception value.

The DPE also means that we can absorb more salary back in an upcoming deal.

(which won't include Yao, of course ;) )

Props to Yao if he still intends to come back, and even to the Rockets if they are willing to wait another whole year. His 7'6" frame has certainly taken a beating over the years, but I think it'll be the same story again next season. I think he should just retire, and the team to just move on.

i doubt it. guy has turned 30 couple months ago. if he can come back next year injury free, i still see 3 or 4 nice years left in him.

rockets will offer him a 4-year contract, $12 million per year, 4th year as option.

It means the exact opposite. You can only get an injury exception, if you expect a player to be out for the whole season. If a player is expected to get better and play, then they can't be granted an exception.

I believe he did say in July if he gets another injury would take him another couple of months to heal then he'll retire, regardless which part of the body the injury is located.
But no doubt the Rockets are gonna make him an offer. The Chinese market is simply too large, and people will always be watching the Rockets simply because Yao is on the team. Plus the Rockets management run the Rockets like a business, not a team.

no i know, i meant that using an injury exception vs. something like announcing retirement/waiving him (which would provide immediate cap relief) implies that the franchise/yao are leaving their options open to a comeback. i'm by no means saying that it'll happen.
