With the free agent market set to open on Sunday, Leafs GM John Ferguson is ready for what lays ahead, reports the Toronto Star.
"We'll be prepared for Sunday," Ferguson told the newspaper.
At the same time, however, Ferguson hinted he might not be as active on the market as some want him to be, but more active over the summer pursuing trades.
"At this time of year there's an overemphasis on free agency," Ferguson said. "A lot of transactions go into putting together a club, whether it's re-signings or trades.
"What's most important is the club and the results once you start playing."
Among the top-end free agents, the Leafs are believed to be interested in wingers Ryan Smyth, Jason Blake and Paul Kariya.
I would be extremely overwhelmed if the Leafs pull off Kariya. I've been wanting this ever since he was a RFA in Anaheim

If only they could ink either Kariya or Smyth, and re-sign Peca to a 6 digit contract i'd be one happy Leaf camper
