Strong rumors coming out of Colorado have Smyth signing there.

Kariya to Toronto still a possibility though.

Briere to Philly for 8 yrs and 52 million. Seems like a lot, a move that I think they will regret.

I hope that we don't do anything over the top because this FA class is not the greatest.

What do people think about Michel Ouellette, 25 yrs old and had 19 goals last season in Pittsburgh? Maybe someone we should look at.

According to Eklund, the Leafs are trying hard to move both Raycroft and Kubina....no word on the players they want to go after though.....I assume they're looking at Smyth and Drury.

Also, Yanic Perrault's days with the Leafs are over....word is he has signed with the Blackhawks....1yr/1.5 million

Radek Dvorak signs with the Panthers, terms undisclosed.

Contacts I have that cover the NHL for a living say Blake is most likely the guy for the Leafs.

Great the Raps horribily overpay and the Leafs might too on the same day :banghead:

I'd take a flyer on Ouellet he's young and has a great scoring touch.

Flyers get Jason Smith and Lopul for Pitkanen, Sanderson, etc.

Blake signs 5 years, 4 million.
I'm sure he'll look real good as a 39 year old making 4 million :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

I don't mind the price actually, alot better than having to pay him 5-6 million like I thought he might go for.

There was also talk that the Leafs were hard after Slava Kozlov, but since Blake has signed, the Kozlov talks are probably done....unless the Leafs can trade 7 million in contracts (Kubina and Razor)

How can you not mind the price. Sure we didn't overpay like we normally do (which would have been to give him 6 million per season). 4 million dollare average doesn't sound bad but giving a 34 year old player a 5 yr contract is just stupid. This proves the Leafs do not know what to do with the changes since the lockout.

3 yr's should have been the max for this player.

So far, the team is improved, but I still don't believe we're heading towards a championship.

NYR get Gomez AND Drury? That's insane, I thought the New NHL prevented a team doing this (grabbing the best two FA's available). Oh well, Bettman at his finest again. What a douchebag.

I don't know, I think the Rangers were just smart in reworking their cap and getting younger and cheaper around and after the lockout.

Yeah you could be right, with that said, the Leafs have got to draft better, their young core isn't like some of the top tier teams.

^^^this is my biggest problem with the Leafs. They used to overpay to field a high caliber team (imo, it was never a true contender but a team just below) but now they can't do that and they still haven't figured out that they need to add quality young players. Our young core of players on the team now and coming in the next few year's doesn't stack up with half the teams in the league and even the team's that are now at the top were once at the bottom and have drafted well and continue to do so while moving up the ladder.

Smyth has narrowed it down to 4 teams and didn't like the Leaf's depth enough to sign with them.

Also from his story:

GM John Ferguson felt he was done for the night, but said he has other oars in the water and would not rule out making a trade in the next 24 hours to free up some cap space. Though Ferguson, typically, would not comment on specific players (Slava Kozlov, for instance), bet on another card falling before the Leafs call it quits.

I have to say that I am thoroughly impressed with the moves the Rangers and Flyers made today. I am especially impressed with what Holmgren has done with Philly from the trade deadline on. These are the kind of things the Leafs should be looking to do, in a span of a short few months he's overhauled his team and gotten younger and better for the new NHL.

It still remains to be seen if the Flyers will in fact be better, but the moves they've made definitely look like they've improved.

If anyone thought the Leafs would get in next year with the moves they've made, things just got tougher. Jersey and Buffalo may take a step back but I doubt they miss the playoffs, the Sens and Pens and Rangers will still be there, so will the Lightning and Canes and possibly the Habs and Bruins.

It's going to be just as tough next year for this team to make the playoffs and the future doesn't look much brighter.

Rumour: Kubina plus something else to NJ for Elias

NJ needs a credible Dman badly now that rafalski is gone. Also they're looking to shake up the organization

If the Leafs did that...I'd plotz....that would be an unbelievable addition.

I'd put Stajan in that package....he looks like he's falling out of the depth charts.....(If Peca is resigned).

The Leafs had a deal with Edmonton for Raycroft that fell through, he's looking to deal him, and sign the newest UFA Curtis Sanford.

I just took another look at Gomez and man is he overpaid. A player that's scored more than 20 goals once in his career, coming off a 13 goal season is now worth 7 million per season. I know he brings a bunch of different things, but this proves how bad this free agent crop really is and how many guys are being overpaid.

I am glad the Leafs aren't jumping in on the big names.

MAS, if that deal with Jersey goes through, I will have new found faith in JFJ.

That would be sexy.

Of course, knowing the Leafs, the "something else" is probably going to be all of our first round draft picks until 2018.
