Sharks strike out
what a bad FA day for us. Lose Hannan, don't gain anyone. Sign Souray now Wilson.

Im ok with not signing anyone, but I dont want to compound the mistake by signing Souray... hes more winger than defenseman IMO, and we really need some defensive help. Up until PHI's flurry of moves, I would have loved to net Derian Hatcher... now I'm not sure what I want. Our defense will be the same... we need to hope our offense steps up.

Our PP would be scary with a shot like Souray's at the Point.
Part of the reason our PP continues to struggle in the playoffs is we don't have a reliable shot at the Point. Teams just overload on Joe because none our defensemens shot at the point strike fear in the oppositions eye.
Erhoff has a nice hard shot at the point, but he misses the net way to often and Carle is more of PP passer then a shooter.

Yeah... our PP and overall defense are our two biggest weaknesses, but I'd rather address the one that effects the entire game... I dont think we'd get enough PPs if our PP was any good, really. I think a lot of teams were ok with taking penalties against us for that reason, and would tighten up if we made a great improvement in the power play, like signing Souray.

Our defense is getting worse this year regardless. Hannan was solid defender. Signing an impact FA was something we needed, and we didn't do anything. Right now we are one notch below a contender, unless Petrecki can become a good defenseman immediately.

Latest news I've got:
No trades are on the horizon. The FO was rumored to have been shopping Marleau but didn't get much value for him, or at least the value they wanted.
The outlook now is that another year together, along with our young improving players (Cheechoo, Michalek, Bernier, Clowe, Vlasic, Carle and Pavelski) is enough to compete for a cup. Also from what my friend hears, no one can say a negative thing about Logan Couture. His #s from the Ottawa 67s (78 pts, 26 G) are even more impressive when you factor in that he had mono to begin the season. Scouts originally had him pegged as injury-prone and a below average skater, but sees him fitting into a Joe Thornton mold. The difference is that he needs better vision to be on Joe's level, but he does have a good shot...
He'll be in the juniors again this year, and has an outside chance at our roster in 2008-09.
