Around the NFL Week 17

Post#1 » by LUKE23 » Mon Dec 27, 2010 2:03 pm

ATL/CAR at 12:00
TB/NO at 12:00
DAL/PHI at 3:15
GB/CHI at 3:15
NY/WAS at 3:15

No hope of knowing really anything before we play. The only way Chicago rests their starters is if BOTH the Falcons beat the Saints and the Vikings beat the Eagles. In that scenario, Chicago can do no better or worse than the #2 seed. If the Saints beat the Falcons, the Bears still have a shot at the #1 seed.

Edit: scratch that, Atlanta plays at noon on week 17. So if it goes Saints win/Vikings win this week, then the Bears see what happens at noon next week. If Falcons win, Bears are locked into #2. If Panthers win, Bears are #1 seed by beating us.

Even if the game is "meaningless" for the Bears, I can't see them laying down for us. I don't think they want to see us in the first round, plus Lovie Smith's sole purpose as the Bears coach is to beat the Packers.

Now that it is week 17, I gotta ask. What ever happened to the whole NFLPA 'we are one' campaign? I know week 1 several teams were on board with the pre-game gestures. I know it didn't really get a warm reception from the fans, curious if that was still going on.

Playoff scenarios.

AFC:

New England has clinched the #1 seed

Pittsburgh or Baltimore will be #2, Pittsburgh gets it with a win, Baltimore needs a win and a Pittsburgh loss.

Kansas City clinches the #3 seed with a win or Indianapolis loss

Indianapolis clinches the #3 seed with a win and a Kansas City loss, Indy clinches the division with a win and at worst the #4 seed

Jacksonville can clinch the #4 seed with a win and a Indianapolis loss.

The wild cards in the AFC are the Jets and either Pittsburgh or Baltimore. The Jets hold the tiebreaker over Pittsburgh but not Baltimore and they are a game behind both. Thus the only way the Jets get the #5 seed is with a win and a Baltimore win and Pittsburgh loss, any other combination of wins and losses and the Jets are the #6 seed with Pittsburgh or Baltimore being the #5.

NFC

I'm too lazy to do all the scenarios until after the NFC games for this week are finished :P

Only things official right now are that the Eagles and Bears have clinched their divisions and the Falcons have clinched a playoff birth. More should be clear after these next 2 games. Oh and St. Louis @ Seattle is a winner take all for the #4 seed.

Falcons obviously have the edge for the #1 seed and the Bears right now have the edge for the #2 seed while the Saints and Packers control their own destiny for the wild cards.

I'm pretty happy KC is going to make it. If the Packers don't win it, I'll be rooting for them. :D

Another scenario I'd like to see if the Packers get knocked out is the Eagles vs. Patriots. I think that would be an epic match-up.

I'm happy for KC too, They have loyal fans and they've been bad for awhile. I like some new blood in the playoffs.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

So how do we get #5 seed again? Beat the Bears and have the Saints lose out?

Yes, then the Saints would be #6 I believe would have to check tiebreakers to confirm but that would put us at #5 against the winner of Rams/Seahawks.

Love to get that #5 seed but I'll be happy just getting in. The Philadelphia miracle paved the way.

Not that there games mean anything anymore, but the Lions are starting to get better. I could see them being better than the Vikings in the next couple of years.

Lions are on the rise. I"m glad they are getting some late season wins so they won't get as high of a draft pick. The Queens are going to be mediocre at best the next couple of years. We'll see how their GM does at doing some rebuilding/retooling. They still have some talent.

Assuming the Viqueens lose to the Eagles on Tuesday then the Lions are playing the Viqueens in week 17 for the right to not have the worst record in the division this year.

I don't know how you can assume that.

The Vikings are starting the better version of Michael Vick that game.

If the Vikings lose to the Eagles tomorrow and the Lions beat the Vikings on Sunday the Lions will have a better record than the Vikings this year. :)

I wonder if SNF is regretting their decision to go with SEA/STL.

The league actually makes that call, not NBC. For the last week of the season they go by whether a game has definite playoff implications. They couldn't wait until after tomorrow nights game. The SEA/STL game is the only game guaranteed right now where both teams have something to play for. But it will still get less ratings than the other two would have. Neither Fox nor CBS can protect any games. NBC can tell the league which game they prefer but ultimately the league decides.

Ok now for the NFC:

Atlanta clinches the #1 seed with a win or losses by Chicago and New Orleans

New Orleans clinches the #1 seed with a win and loss by Atlanta

Chicago clinches the #1 seed with a win and losses by Atlanta and New Orleans

Either an Atlanta win, New Orleans win or Chicago loss and Chicago is locked into the #2 seed

Philadelphia is the #3 seed no matter what

The winner of St. Louis @ Seattle is the #4 seed

New Orleans or Atlanta is the #5 seed, whoever doesn't get the division.

Packers win and they secure the #6 seed

Giants get the #6 seed with a win and a Packers loss

Tampa Bay gets the #6 seed with a win and losses by the Packers and Giants

Everyone else is eliminated
