It doesn't matter who the better players are on the blueline, and how you're going to compare them based on salaries. The important thing is, we have them now, on our roster, so it's time to figure out where everyone is going to play. Pavel Kubina is a great player to have on our blueline, paired with McCabe, Carlo and Kaberle, but is slightly overpaid. At this point in free agency, and with our forward roster all but set pending a signing or insignificant trade, I don't see the point in trading Kubina. Unless Peca wants more than what we have available in cap space, I'd rather keep him and play more of a defensive type of hockey.

I agree...
Salaries are not important, I was just pointing out that most teams are interested in McCabe, Kubina and Kaberle and that I would never deal Kaberle because he is the best we have but if we do trade a Defenceman, because of Kubina's contract, he was the most likely to go but I would like to see him traded for another very good player like Hejduk and Cap space would only be a secondary consideration...
I like Peca but not at the expense of Kubina...

well... you could look at it like that OR you could look at it as Peca this year AS WELL as Kubina's contract off the books next year. The latter could be a long term positive because it is a much stronger FA class next year and we would have another $10 (assuming we don't re-sign Mats and Peca) to spend on a FA

So your saying we should deal Kubina, take back say draft choices or a player or two with expiring contracts next year, then sign Peca to a one year contract...
Next year not resign Peca, Sundin or any of the expiring contracts and pick up a free agent or an RFA or two, with the 10 mill...

Sounds good, not sure if the FA's will be as good as this years crop though lots could re-sign with their teams (So too could Sundin) but bound to be more expensive LOL ...

well it's not like the NBA where you hafta match salaries. Concievably you could trade Kubina for some form of draft pick and that it so you don't even need expiring back

Newest Leaf Rumours:

*The Avs have asked Toronto for Carlo Colaiacovo, a prospect and a #1 draft pick in return for Milan Hejduk. Toronto believes the price is too high for the Avs forward.

*According to the Globe and Mail, pressure from Toronto Maple Leaf ownership delivered the final death blow to the sale of the Nashville Predators to Jim Balsillie. The Leafs did not want a franchise located in Southern Ontario.

*The Avs and Leafs continue to talk trade. The asking price for Hejduk is too high according to the Leafs so they've turned their attention to Svatos.

*The Leafs continue to shop Andrew Raycroft. Colorado, Los Angeles and Phoenix are the most likely destinations. The Leafs would like to give him up for next to nothing in order to clear more cap space, but the other interested teams want to the Leafs to take back one of their bad contracts.

The last one bothers me. The Leafs would like to give Raycroft away for next to nothing??

How about trading him to Boston for Tuuka Rask? :(

I think I'd prefer to trade him for a good player right now, someone like Hejduk in a straight one for one, no need to get a free agent...

If we do keep him and find ourselves out of a play-off spot at the deadline, then swap him for picks and young prospects. This would be a good way to go too because you could gain more assets and still get cap space, trouble with this scenario is Mike Peca will have moved on ...

There are any number of ways to go, it all depends on our needs and those of another team to make the best deal...

I think Svatos is the better play in this situation. It will take way too much to aquire Hejduk apparently and we just dont the young assets (picks mostly) to be able to afford to give up again in trade. Svatos is easily a first liner in my mind and showed this 2 seasons ago scoring like 35 goals or so. I think with Sundin and Blake, he would be capable of 30 goals next year and that would make a great first line of Blake/Sundin/Svatos.

Colaiacovo >>> Svatos

(in terms of value, not team's needs)

If we're dangling Carlo as trade bait, we'd better be able to snatch something better than Svatos.

How does Coliacovo have more value then Svatos?

Coliacovo is majorly injury prone and has never once played more then 50 games in a season while Svatos scored 30+ goals in his first full season in the league which was only 2 seasons ago.

Svatos has proven more and doesnt come with the MAJOR injury concerns.

Svatos is a 7th round draft pick who had a standout rookie year (32g, 18ast) playing on a line with Sakic. Last season, he had a considerable drop in production (15g, 15ast) and was even a healthy scratch for good chunks of the season.

Colaiacovo has had a history of injuries, but has proved to be without question the 4th best defencemen on the team when in the lineup, which says alot considering the top 3 are borderline allstars. He's reliable, a hard hitter, and can PK or play the powerplay.

I don't mind Svatos but I truly feel his fluke rookie stats over-inflate his talent... he's never been that high of a calibre player (even in juniors) and I'd be very surprised if he hit that goal total again. I know every draft there are diamonds in the rough, but he was picked in the 7th round for a reason. I'd much rather give up a package that included White as opposed to Colaiacovo.

Maybe playing on a line with Sakic did inflate his numbers, but the point is Svatos has proven he can play at least 60 games in one season, which Coliacovo hast yet to do. Svatos has shown that he is capable of playing on a first line. Just because your put in the position to be on a first line doesnt automatically mean your going to put up big numbers because you play next to a superstar (look at Antropov and Poni playing with Mats).

Coliacovo did look good in the 48 games (career high) but until he shows he can play a full season which entails at least 60+ games, his value will not be as high as youd like to think. I could also say Svatos has shown explosive speed and offense and has the potential to be a perennial 35 goal scorer, but that would be pure specualtion on my part just like your doing in trying to project Coliacovo into this teams 3rd or 4th best defencemen (Until he plays a full season, I dont see how he can be given this tag).

there both similar ages, but one guy has proven that he can score 20-30 goals over a full season and thats alot more then Coliacovo has shown. Once Carlo's sample size raise's then so will his value.

I hope we can get Forsberg or Yashin to minimum vet deals. Would really solidify our roster. And if we can trade either or even both McCabe and Kubina, then this team gets a lot better...

Chad Kilger doesn't recieve the minimum salary, there's no way Forsberg (an impactful player when healthy) and Yashin (ditto) settle for a low salary, especially by their standards.

Svatos WOULD be the type of guy the Leafs would get.

I can see it now "We just got the rookie with the 3rd highest amount of points ... just behind Crosby and Ovechkin"

The type of player that they try to put in the same class as REAL top players but we all know they're not

Exactly.

In regards to BlueJay's post, I agree that Carlo's bout with injuries significantly lowers his value. But looking at an individual game in which both Carlo and Svatos are healthy, Carlo has a much bigger impact. Injuries are something that you can't predict and I always think that in order to win a cup you MUST take a risk and hope for the best, which is why I'd advocate acquiring a guy like Forsberg despite his injury history.

It's a bang or bust, but IF he stays healthy you've got yourself one of the best players in the game. Playing it safe gets you nowhere. I look at dealing Colaiacovo in the same regard.

DONE DEAL: Hejduk a Leaf (with link)

Post#300 » by juucer » Fri Jul 20, 2007 2:21 pm

LINK

Bob McPhee writes, "According to several of my sources, the Avalanche and Maple Leafs have agreed on a deal that would send Pavel Kubina and Carlo Colaiacovo to Colorado for Milan Hejduk and Marek Svatos. It still has to be finalized though. But they have agreed on a deal according to my sources."

To Toronto: Hejduk + Svatos
To Colorado: Kubina + Colaiacovo

Not official, and I don't know about the source... I guess we'll find out soon.
