Jackson criticizes league's ownership of Hornets

Post#1 » by Jetset » Thu Dec 30, 2010 3:57 am

Not sure if posted:
NEW ORLEANS -- A little more than a week ago the NBA finalized their purchase of the New Orleans Hornets, buying the team from majority owner George Shinn and minority owner Gary Chouest in hopes of finding a new ownership group.

Los Angeles Lakers head coach Phil Jackson, in town to play the Hornets on Wednesday, voiced his displeasure with the transaction to reporters before the game.

"Not happy about that," Jackson said, when asked about the purchase.

"Who's going to trade who to whom? Who's going to pull the button on trading player or when Chris [Paul] says he has to be traded, how's that going to go? I don't know. Somebody's going to have to make a very nonjudgmental decision on that part that's not going to irritate anybody else in this league ... I don't know how they're going to do that."

The Hornets basketball decisions and day-to-day operations will continue to be controlled by team president Hugh Weber and general manager Dell Demps, but Jackson was skeptical that any move made by New Orleans would be viewed as the league helping out another franchise.

"That's what everybody is going to be afraid of: who is going to be helping who out?" Jackson asked.

He's right.

What happens if the Hornets want/need to make a trade? Sign a player? They gotta find a buyer fast.

Also, there's no reason to keep the Hornets in New Orleans. They aren't going to make it there. Even if they stay there, the team has little chance of succeeding. It'd be disastrous when CP3 leaves.

They should move the team now.

Why is it any of Phil's business what might happen if Chris Paul demands a trade? Not sure why he would even bring it up.

I'm sure a reporter asked him about it besides as Jase said it's just Phil being Phil.
Thank you, Phil.

Phil doesn't want any part of Las Vegas Hornets or a Anaheim Hornets.... J/K

Phil is right. But you cant tell me he doesn't see what they are trying to do. There is no way Paul leaves the Hornets while NBA is owning the Hornets. That trade aint happening. UNLESS, there is some big time talent coming back or 1st rounder and lots of cash.

If Paul is traded away from the Hornets, the price tag of that team will be cut in half if not more. It will overnight be a bargain basement team. Okay that may be good for Barkley or some other NBA retiree who dreams of owning a team. Maybe at that bargain price Donald Trump enters the fray and send the Hornets to Vegas or Louisville.

But for the NBA to make money or come out on top financially They can NOT trade Paul. :reporter:

He should be concerned about how poorly this team is playing rather than what the Hornets are doing.

I'm pretty sure the current GM will make the final decision on trades. NBA Is just protecting the franchise and also making a tiny profit if there is any coming through from the Hornets.

The part that's baffling to me is the luxury tax situation. Does the NBA pay itself to keep the Hornets over the luxury tax? Sounds like a nice situation to be in.

most of the lux tax money goes back to the teams under the lux tax anyway.

Sounds about right. I used to do the numbers and finance at my previous place of employment we used to do it all the time.

yeah, all the teams under the lux tax get a 1/30 share of all the lux tax money paid by the team over it. the money left over (the shares for teams over the lux tax) is either simply returned to ALL teams equally or set aside for league purposes that are limited through the CBA.

Yeah and the fact he knows we wouldn't be able to punk somebody into taking garbage back.

But looking at our roster now we're pretty decent except for "cough...Luke cough".
