Toivonen's departure
By Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff
Hannu Toivonen was once projected as the long-term No. 1 netminder in Boston.
But after a disastrous 2006-07 season in which he went 3-9-1 with a 4.23 GAA and an .875 save percentage, Toivonen became even more expendable once the Bruins acquired Manny Fernandez from Minnesota.
If the Bruins didn't have Tuukka Rask penciled in for the majority of starts in Providence in 2007-08, they would have most likely retained Toivonen and allowed him to develop in the AHL.
"It's a fresh start for Hannu," said Bill Zito, Toivonen's agent. "He's going into a good situation there. It's going to be on Hannu's shoulders to do the things he's good at and focus on that. He'll get a chance."
Toivonen has been working out in Wilmington and planned to travel with goaltending coach Bob Essensa to Calgary next month for a goalie camp.

Chiarelli confirmed Soderberg will be coming over for next year. He's in the 3-6 range of our prospect depth chart right now, but he has so much talent if he has no ill effects from eye injury, he could leapfrog Rask to number one.
