He blows. His only asset is his size and once that is neutralized he doesn't have the speed to stay with opponents. I just don't like him, to me, he just gets owned.

Not much really to make a I hate Hal Gill facebook group.

Hal Gill provides a veteran big body who will move guys out from the front of the net, be one of your team 2 best defensive d-men and pot the odd goal or two.

You guys think too highly of the guy IMO. HE's not the second coming of Zdeno Chara...for the price we got him....he's well worth the money....we could be paying him 3.5 million a year like Derian Hatcher....where a dislexic elephant would be better....but hey...he was one of the better +/- guys on the team....so that counts for something....especially with how brutal they were with GA.

Hal Gill was one of our best penalty killers last season, if not, the best. He has a huge wingspan, which sometimes makes up for his lack of speed. He's a good defensive defenseman, and provides leadership. I can't count how many times he stuck up for our young players last season, that's someone you want in your dressing room.

I don't think anyone thinks "too highly" of Hal Gill. He's matched expectations, and played exactly how many thought he would. He's a good #4/#5 type of defenseman, and earns his contract.

IMHO Hal Gill is one of the better defensemen in the league at the 5 on 3 penalty kill. He's a big body, plays exceptionally well positionally, and has the insticts to block shots/cut off passes.

His skating is horrible, but for $2M I don't think he's being overpaid or anything. I really don't get what the OP is whining about.

No he is not overpaid, I would agree that he is worth what he is given, but with his contract aside I just don't like him as a player. As mentioned, he is all size, so that is why he is effective on the 5 on 3. However, play Hal Gill 5v5 and he gets owned. I can remember so many times when watching the Leafs last season when it was Hal Gill's fault for giving up a goal and ultimately resulting in our loss. It's not the quantity of goals that was his fault, but its the timing of them.

As for leading the team in +/- as somebody mentioned, I personally don't like the stat.

To me, +/- is an overrated stat. It doesn't set apart a good defense man from a bad. Is Hal Gill better than Scott Neidermayer because Scott only has a +6? No.

+/- is inaccurate because the skill of your teammates can help boost your stat up. Hal Gill could have been on the ice without doing anything but a goal has been scored and therefore he gets a +1.

Even when the Leafs are on a shorthanded situation, where the Leafs have TWO more players on the ice, Hal can still get a +1. This stat can't be taken seriously because the stat is affected with both even strength AND shorthanded opportunities.

Basically, I think for a defensive defenseman he earns it, but overall, its just funny watching him get danced on by players when he is playing 5v5.

You just made the point, he is seldom on the ice in a man advantage situations. Your power play Defence Re: Kaberle/McCabe or Coliacovo/Kabina are on...

Gill does his job and clears the front of the net and backs up White when he tries an offensive Play, They are a good 3rd tandem...

I am just saying that to prove why I don't like the +/- stat. It can account for any player in the league.

MAS you can lock this thread up.
