Rose Bowl grades:
Coaching: Why did Wisconsin lose this game despite the stats? Coaching decisions. Now, I loved Bret Bielema calling a fake punt deep in his own territory in the first half, but other than that, he left me scratching my head quite a bit. There was the questionable clock management at the end of the first half that forced Wisconsin to settle for a field goal, as it seems Bielema thought unused timeouts carried over to the second half. The biggest gaffe, however, came at the end of the game. On Wisconsin's final drive the Badgers ran the ball right down TCU's throat with John Clay and Montee Ball. After finally punching the ball into the end zone, the Badgers had to go for two, so what did Wisconsin do? They spread it out with four receivers and decided to throw. A Tank Carder fly swat later and TCU was Rose Bowl champions. Grade:F

I think most Badger fans would agree with this.

MM probably shed a tear tonight he's so proud of BB.

If we didn't have a must win to make the playoffs tomorrow, that would have been funnier.

Not a huge surprise but Toon tweeted he'll be back next year.

Consider this.

If the Packers and Badgers had simply won on the score board in games in which they won statically this season we would have a Rose Bowl champ and an NFC North Division Champ + a playoff game at Lambeau, maybe two.

Well YOU wouldn't have a Rose Bowl champ but you get my point.

When teams win statistically they usually win the scoreboard, but when they don't it's usually due to bad coaching and or being out coached by a superior coach.

It's probably been said, but that timeout we used after we pounded them for 2 big runs on that last drive was terrible. Totally pissed me off.

Also, on the 3rd down stop we needed to get that last drive, our CB was playing like 7 yards of the WR when they only needed 3 yards. If it weren't for our guy batting the ball down at the line, that would have iced the game right there. They were killing us all game with short passes, and we didn't adjust on the biggest play of the game.

I said the exact same thing to family watching it. I saw him lined up way beyond the 1st down line and I said what the hell are you doing? They need 3 yards, a quick little slant gets them at least 5.

The constant playing at least 7 yards off the line of scrimmage by our defensive backs is infuriating. Sure, if you play press you might get burned on a long pass but I'd rather have that happen (especially with only a 15 yard penalty for pass interference in college football) than have the other team just dink and dunk their way down the field with little flanker screens and slants and stuff. That's just brutal to watch, especially when there is no adjustment made to it.

I was in a roomful on like 15 people and almost everyone saw it.

I thought they might run the ball there, but was ready to lose my mind if they converted on the slant. When they actually went for the slant, I was pissed. I thought they were going to get it.

I can't believe they would play that kind of coverage on a 3rd and short. Also, the safety was about 20 yards deep in the secondary. I guess in case of a play action or something.

Also, we basically lost because of field position, IMO.

Our best starting position in the 2nd half was the 20, if I'm not mistaken. We were pinned under the 10 yard line at least 3 times, too.

I'm taking solace in the fact that this game makes the BCS look bad. Any team that goes undefeated and doesn't get a chance to play for the title enormously helps the argument for a playoff.

It wasn't just that play, it was the entire game. The DB's lined up 10 yards off the receivers, then when the ball was snapped they backpedaled another 5-10 yards. I am shocked TCU didn't destroy us with the way our defense was set up honestly.

Haven't the DBs played soft all year long? I wonder if it it's because of the lack of confidence in the DBs or it's part of the DC's schemes.

I haven't watched the play more than two or three times due to the pain it causes but it looked to me like Kevin Zeitler sorta stopped blocking on that failed two point conversion. If he had stayed engaged with Tank Carder, it would have made it more difficult for him to break up the pass the attempt. I admittedly don't know a lot about pass blocking but, even if the guy you are blocking isn't a threat to get to the QB, I would think you want to keep blocking to keep his arms and hands occupied so he has a lesser chance of knocking down a pass.

Like everyone else, I wanted to see a Clay run. But the play call worked, the execution failed. Even just a pump fake or a different angled pass by Tolzien and we get the 2.

I won't shed a tear about Doeren leaving as defensive coordinator, his defensive system is as vanilla as it gets. Rush four and play a soft zone behind it every single down.

I'm not positive about this, but i think Doeren was a pretty valuable recruiter on the staff though

WOW, really?

SouhanStrib Jim Souhan
Billboard in Detroit reads: Michigan State 34, Wisconsin 24. Haven't gotten around to the Alabama score, I see.

I have finally returned from an epic LA/Vegas trip. Here were my seats. Note: the large ginger woman was just passing through as I took this one:

Let's please stop bumping this thread. I don't want to think about the Rose Bowl anymore.

Yea, that game still is hanging around in my head because we simply should have won it.

What is everyone's take on Chryst getting interest from Texas (OC), Pitt (HC), and the Dallas Cowboys (OC)? Seems like he's a hot commodity right now and could be on the move.

They had a guy from Madison yesterday on WSSP and said he finds it unlikely that Chryst would take a coordinator job anywhere else since his daughter is going to be a senior in high school and his parents still live here.
