OT: Orioles sign Derek Lee

Post#1 » by rarefind » Fri Dec 31, 2010 11:43 pm

The Orioles and Derek Lee have agreed to a one-year contract, reports Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun.

SI.com's Jon Heyman reports that Lee turned down $8.5 million from the Padres but will get just under $8 million from Baltimore.

Surprised AA didn't offer him a bit more considering the value Lee could have at the trade deadline.

8 Mil is a big gamble for a trade deadline move, especially as this team's in a cost-cutting mode this off season.

Not a bad signing for the O's if he can stay heathly. But like Kurtz said that's alot money to gamble for a deadline move.

On a side note is Adam LaRoche still available? He could a good stop gap 1B for us at the right price.

i like what the Os have been doing this offseason.. trading for Mark Reynolds and signing Derek Lee...Buck Showalter had them playing great ball at the end of last yr and this group is definitely an upgrade...they just need pitching now...their position players r all good though..Wieters, Lee, Reynolds, Roberts, and Hardy in the infield then Markakis, Pie, and Jones in the OF....thats prettyy prettyy good (Larry David Voice)

Wouldn't have made sense for the Jays if their goal is to continue the development of Adam Lind at first. O's are following the Jays model - outslug their opponents. Good move on their part and makes the AL East that much more competitive.

the scary thing is if baltimore struggles what they can fetch for the guys they signed or acquired this summer. but yeah, camden will probably be unkind to gregg.

as far as their pitching goes, matusz, britton and arrieta aren't bad and all have bright futures.

Return to Toronto Blue Jays
