2)Why is that? Varejao played PF successfully next to Big Z who's much less mobile than Darko. I just find it to be a very ignorant statement.
Watch how you throw around the word ignorant. A less restrained poster would open up on you with both barrels for that kind of crap. Varejao could play next to Big Z because Big Z had a JUMP SHOT. Neither Varejao or Darko can even consistently hit a 10 footer, you can't even run a pick and roll with either of them. It's my OPINION that they would be a very ugly frontcourt on the offensive end which cancels out the defensive benefit. Even if you pair them at the end of the game to protect a lead, you
a.) take Love out of the Game
b.) put 2 really crappy FT shooters in there to rebound.
I also don't see Rambis as the type of coach who would run a 3-man rotation at the PF/C spots or who would trade offense for defense. He hasn't played Pek/Darko together all year and won't run a 3-man wing rotation either.
Darko is too foul prone to play 30 mins? He averages 4.1 fouls per 30 minutes. Before he got hurt he had a streak where he played 32 minutes in 5 consecutive games and 29:35 in 7 straight. A streak that coincided with 6 straight games of 3+ blocks and 8 straight 2+ block games. He's fouled out 4 times in 33 starts. He hasn't regained his mobility since the injury, which causes him to foul more. Let him get healthy. Varejao has blocked 3+ shots 4 times all year, and did so 6 times in 76 games last year. I just don't see him as the kind of defensive difference maker that you guys think he is.
There's one other big advantage Darko has on Varejao: a post game. Since Love is not a post threat that is extra important, it keeps the defense honest and creates spacing for shooters.
I just think that better and cheaper options will come along in the next 2-3 years. Give Pek more than 30 games to prove he can't be an adequate backup. I'd rather go after Przybilla, Dalembert, or Nazr Mohammed on a cheap deal in the offseason, or even take a chance on Oden.
I'll give you the point on experience eyeteeth, I just think that a) Varejao is not the only option if we are looking for experience, and b.) experience isn't going to matter for 2-3 years until we start winning, and by that time Pek's learning curve should have caught up to his talent. (Ricky is going to need some seasoning too). Pek has lots of Pro experience, just not at this level under this set of rules.
I guess I turned the anthony randolph thread into the flameproof sideshow bob thread.
