As per the wiretap, it looks like Chandler is getting resigned. I wouldn't doubt it if it was in the 5 years $60 million range. He's a young guy and there is pretty low SF talent in the league right now.

If Ronny Turiaf opts into his player option, the Knicks salary next year without Chandler would be around $42.5 million. Let's assume there is no lock out, things stay status quo and the salary cap was $58 million (the 2010-2011 figure).

If Chandler resigns for 5 years, $60 million, starting at $10 million a year (with a $1 million a year increments), then the salary would be at $52.5 million. That would leave about $5.5 million. They would be better off just using the MLE and not be under the cap.

That would mean that it would be more beneficial to trade Eddy Curry's and/or Azubuike salary, for example, for longer term salary in a salary dump situation. Then you could be over the cap and use the MLE plus have more talent in the off season. Ultimately this would seemingly eliminate the possibility of signing Melo outright, for example, but it would give the Knicks a better chance of becoming a perennial playoff contender for the next 4-5 years (which I might add it better than the previous 4-5years).

I haven't checked your numbers, so I'm just replying assuming their accuracy to explain a concept.

In your scenario, Chandler's cap hold would be $6.4m. All they would have to do is ask him to wait to complete his contract until the KNicks used their maximum cap space.

So in your scenario, you can add $4.4m back in the til ($10m eventual salary - $6.4 cap hold), giving the Knicks $9.9m to spend BEFORE they finalize Chandler, which is more/better than the MLE.

It's definitely in our best interest to be over the cap heading into the offseason, but not if we haven't retained Melo by the deadline first. We obviously need to remain cap friendly to sign Melo in the offseason, even if that means losing Chandler and Turiaf for nothing.

The smart bet is trying to land Melo NOW, giving us the flexibility to keep Chandler and Turiaf while acquiring the MLE to make further moves in the offseason.

I'd love to see Melo and Ridnour here at the deadline, S&T Wilson in the offseason to the Cavs for Varejao, sign Shannon Brown to the full MLE and Anthony Parker to the vets min.

idk but after reading these posts, it seems like the sensible thing to do would be to trade for Melo and sign Chandler in the offseason...i thought we'd be better off waiting for Melo to be a FA so we can keep our pieces but apparently if we do that, we cant sign Chandler w/o making trades n whatnot...like i've said before..i trust Donnie and i'm sure he will sign both Melo and CHandler...whatever it takes..

Are we sure that Melo's starting salary would be 18 million if he opts out? I've seen 16.5. I'm not sure if it's 30% of the cap and it's more on how many years he's played.

Under current CBA max salary rules, Melo's max would be 105% of his prevous salary ($17,149,243) so approx $18 million.
