The deal is Fuld, Lee, Chirinos, Archer, and Guyer for Matt Garza and two minor leaguers.

I feel that this is a TON of guys to get a guy in a just Garza deal

I would feel a lot better keeping one of Archer/Lee/Guyer but I guess this move is a going for it type move that the Cubs had to make

C Soto
1B Pena
2B DeWitt
SS Castro
3B Ramirez
OF Colvin
OF Soriano
OF Byrd

SP Garza
SP Dempster
SP Zambrano
SP Wells
SP Silva/Samardzija

RSU Wood
LSU Marshall
CL Marmol

Not a bad team IMO.

The way I see it, prospects are meant to be traded unless they are elite and the guys we're giving up are average.

@Buster_ESPN: general perception of proposed Cubs-Garza deal from rival evaluators: Cubs give up lot of volume, but no can't-miss star.

I realllly wanted to bring in Garza and I'm glad we got him. I'm no expert on the minor leaguers we have but we didn't give up any of our top 3 guys in the system did we? Also, it will be interesteing to see if any of the minor leaguers we get back are decent enough prospects to make up for giving up all these guys.

Baseball America has Archer as the Cubs #1 prospect, Lee #4, and Guyer #10. So yes, it was a hefty pricetag.

not sure if this is a good trade? but we'll see how our former prospects turn out in the future.

Hmm, I thought Vitters and Jackson were our top 2. Didn't know Archer was our #1 prospect. Getting him for Derosa seemed like it was a great deal for us if that's the case. Seems like quite the price tag.

That's a lot of young talent to give up.

If Archer pans out and sticks as a major league starter, this deal will be terrible. If he doesn't, it's a good move.

At least Hendry deals three top prospects and we get back a legit top of the line starter instead of Juan Pierre, so some improvement there!

I think it depends on who's list you're looking at. I will say Archer is the one that I'm most concerned about dealing, but you have to give up some value and Garza is a very good addition.

Personally, I think this is a terrible trade, but only because of giving up Archer. Does Garza make us a playoff team? NO. The Ricketts are just making a move to justify there ticket prices. This team lacks any kind of organizational blueprint. The Ricketts are just trying to make money, and thus far I havent seen them make moves for long term. Secondly, Hendry makes this deal to try and save his job. This trade is not in our best interest long-term. And Archer was our top pitching prospect, hands down.

Bingo.

Every move for the past year has been moving towards a better future. We've been dealing for prospects and avoiding bad contracts. Diverting from this sensible rebuilding plan seems odd unless the reasons are non-baseball related. I think this is more about creating the illusion of contention for ticket sales and buzz.

Hendry has made bad moves, in fact many in the past. This we know. But this trade getting ripped is just foolish. We like Archer, Lee, and Guyer. But does the fact that Garza is 27, has great stuff (can be inconsistent), had below 4 era three years in Al East going to NL Central, and was clutch in playoffs mean anything. I realize that we are mediocre defensively and Wrigley is homer friendly but Garza's a good young pitcher with ace potential. Lee is a good prospect but our system has a surplus of young middle infielders (Flaherty, Lake, LaMahieu, and Thomas just to name a few), Archer's a loss no doubt but we have built system depth for last 2-3 years by getting prospects for everyone from Heilman to Lilly and DeRosa and we'll get Perez and another young Rays player and probably prospects for Gorzellany and or wells. And does the fact that we brought over two Rays players mean anything?
