Orton for Second-Round Pick?

NFL.com - The Broncos would be willing to trade quarterback Kyle Orton in exchange for a second-round pick, according to a report in The Denver Post.

Orton completed 293 of 498 passes (58.8 percent) for 3,653 yards, 20 touchdowns and nine interceptions this past season.

I don't think he's as good as his numbers, but he's an upgrade over anything we have in SF. Might not be a bad idea to draft QB sign QB and develop the rook.

I dont like it...specially with Vince Young being released...I would rather take a chance with him. All depends on the coach, but I also like Cam Newton or Mallett this year.

BTW...why does the NFL board get no love on realgm?

I wouldn't touch Vince Young with a 59 1/2 foot pole. Young was under a very solid coach in Fisher and couldn't keep his head on straight, pass on him with the quickness.

Orton, I'd consider, but he wouldn't be the first guy I'd target, and probably not at that price.

I'm assuming both Alex Smith & David Carr are long gone, Troy Smith might be brought back, which I'd be okay with, if he had a full training camp with the team I could see good things.

Alot of what makes sense as far as QB is going to be somewhat dependent on who they bring in as coach.

nonononono. Neither Young or Orton. Orton would be a short term solution to a long term problem.

As mentioned, Orton is clearly better than anything Frisco has. However, I wouldn't be real excited with him. Kyle put up good numbers this season, but he also played for a team that all but refused to run the ball. IMO Orton is a much better fantasy football quarterback, than he is a real life quaterback. We've seen his celing, and I don't think he can sustain a high level of play for very long.

If the new regime's primary goal is making the playoffs from jump they would definitely need to acquire an immediate starting vet Qube. Orton qualifies, but if thats the direction they want to go in, I would just assume sign McNabb outright. No way in hell Donovan returns to the Skins, so he will be a free agent. I would possibly look into Orton for something like a 5th, but I'll easily pass on him if it takes a 2nd. No matter what the new regime's short term goals are, a young Qube for the long haul is an essential pickup. Orton is a 1 year (possibly 2) rental, which is why I would much rather keep the draft picks and just sign Donovan.

But I would put some serious consideration into offering a 2nd for Kevin Kolb. He's been groomed in a superb system for several seasons, but is still pretty young. I know he has looked kind of shaky at times, but at other times he's looked downright great. He has been pushed and pulled around wragged for the last 2 years, which is partly the reason for the inconsistency IMO. I think if you acquire him and unequivocally hand him the keys from jump, he could morph into a quality Qube of the future for an NFL team. With this scenario Frisco could grab a top tier CB in the 1st, and also get their (potential) qube of the future.

As for VY, I'l just say put me down for a hell no.

I have more faith in keeping Troy Smith with a full training camp then trading for Kevin Kolb. I have very little faith in Kolb.

I think the best thing the 49ers can do is move on with all of our quarterbacks as starters. Yes, Troy Smith with a training camp could develop into a better player, but that is what we said about Alex Smith several times. A great quarterback would show themselves quicker and we should settle for nothing less.

As for the options that are available it is possible that Orton might be the best option. We cannot with all of our struggles with quarterback take a chance on Vince Young. The three best options are Orton, McNabb, and Kolb. I think all have different pros and cons. To me the important thing is to try to get one of these guys for the role of an immediate starter while we find a quarterback of the future. The benefit of Kolb is that he could potentially be that guy as well. The 49ers should look at these guys and try to go for the one with the lowest price and by price I mainly mean if we have to give up draft picks. Th 49ers have a lot of needs and an early second is too high a price for only a short term answer.

Adam Shefter said today that it would take 2 1sts to pry away Kevin Kolb. I like Kolb, but I definitely don't like him that much. Thats what it took for Cutler. Now, I don't really think Cutler is super great, but he definitely had more value at the time he was traded than Kolb has right now.

I say no to a 2nd round for Orton. I would give up a 4th but we have too many other needs. Besides with the quarterback prospects in the draft, our best bet is to get one in the 2nd round and pick up a defender in the first. We need a free agent pick up. The draft is too important. I say we go get Jeff Garcia back from the UFL.

What would you guys think of Matt Flynn and packers 5th for 49er's 3rd would anyone do that? He looked very good at NE and I have heard good things about him

Flynn is probably better than any Qube on Frisco's roster, but that isn't saying a whole lot. As you mentioned Flynn played well against New England, but how much of that had to do with the great recieving corps GB has? New England's defense is full of young players and not as good as advertised. Plus, Flynn really struggled against Detroit the week before. I realize he prolly got like 5% of the snaps in practice leading up to that game, but Detroit's 2ndary is awful and he still had that corps of quality recievers to work with.

If Frisco is trading picks for a Qube, I would prefer getting a veteran. Or if Frisco passes on a qube @ 7 (hopefully getting a corner), I would prefer packaging some picks to move back into the 1st round at some point and grabbing one of the top QB prospects in this draft.

I'd like Palmer, but not sure how much i'd be willing to give up for him... especially considering i would still advocate using a draft pick on a young QB and we have desperate needs at CB and Pass rush.

I agree. CBs more than pass rush in my opinion. But what about Kevin Kolb? He definitely needs to be in the discussion, I think. He put up solid numbers, it just happened that Vick put up better ones. Also, there's no way in hell I'd be willing to give up ANYTHING for Vince Young (just as a side note). My options for QB are Kolb, Orton and Palmer.

I agree, i just heard the asking price for Kolb was pretty high... like a 1st and a 2nd or something along those lines. No thanks. We have gaping holes to address on the defense.

Good comment. Exactly what I was thinking. Right now I think a first or second is too high for any quarterback. I think we should look for what quarterbacks we can get through free agency or third round or lower. Our first two picks need to be in my opinion a corner and a pass rusher. That could change though if we address needs during free agency but it is a possibility that free agency happens after the draft this year.

I don't trust Kolb yet. He looked good in a couple games this year but look at the team he is playing with. I really think we have to go with someone in free agency and then find someone to develop for the future. Anyone up for giving Nate Davis another shot? I would like to see what Harbaugh can do with him.
