Any talk of playoffs for the Nets this year is unrealistic after a trade. It'll take that team a good 20 more games to find a rhythm. 57+ games into a season isn't time to make a playoff run when you're at the back of the playoff picture.

Which makes the decision even more disturbing

Nets beat writer Al Iannazzone points out that the rumored blockbuster trade for Carmelo Anthony would almost have to be completed on Monday, lest NJ be left with five healthy players.
New Jersey is expected to ship out eight players (including Devin Harris) if the deal is completed as reported, and everyone involved needs to pass physicals. With the Nets playing on Wednesday, there wouldn't be sufficient time if this is delayed past Monday. Stay tuned. Jan. 9 - 9:22 pm et

nice to see someone actually looking at it logistically and sensibly

Jordan. Farmer.

Nets obviously knew this was going to happen. That's why they signed him.

Berger has been Melo's mouthpiece this entire time, looks like this whole saga is finally ending.

Put yourself in Carmelo's shoes:

He gets the extension.
He gets NY.
Becomes face of Brooklyn franchise.
LaLa gets her dream. (BFF is also dating player on team)
Doesn't have to remain in limbo in Denver and can finally move onto the next chapter in his life/career.
The Nets with Billups, Rip, Melo, Humphries, Lopez is a playoff team.
He could potentially be teaming up with stars in 2012.
Doesn't have uncertainty of CBA looming over his head.

The con's are obviously there as well, but there are more than enough there to justify signing with the lowly Nets.

But if he forces his way to NY he is actually in the city not in a place where they draw 5 thousand fans a game maybe.
Just do a search for empty nba game arenas
less then 1 thousand in this game the nets are really doctoring the facts but they are 30th this year at 13 thousand which I find hard to believe.
http://espn.go.com/nba/attendance
It is bad choice by him career wise all the way around but so be it. At least we can get a center and become a more balanced team

So essentially Carmelo a player at the top of his game and in his prime is going to tie his future and his legacy to 33 year old player with declining skills and a massive contract.

If he's thinking at all he's short term thinking.

Alex Raskin: sources close to the negotiations just told me that they "heard it from the horse's mouth," that Melo will sign with the #Nets. 1 minute ago

Who the **** is Alex Raskin?
i wondered that too. hoopsworld.com
Alex Raskin, much like most of the other ignorant media idiots, is a Knick hater.

dude, no. They'd have to win about 25 games-30 games from here on out, with a non-existent bench and a Cottenelle soft center who averages six boards a game. Rip sucks. Even if Billups came along for the ride, it's still not enough. Indy, Milwaukee, and Philly are all still better.

it would be very rough but currently the nets are 5 games out so i have to say it's possible. i wouldn't bet on it.

he throws away 1.5 years of his PRIME to wait for 2012?

You could have said the same thing about Amare after he signed with the Knicks.

The Nets are only 6 games back of the 8th seed, you add players of Melo and Billups caliber into the eastern conference and you have a team that probably sneaks into the playoffs.

Obviously I don't agree with this line of reasoning, but it is the likely thought process of Carmelo and some of the rationalizations points being proposed by his "Team".

Outsider wondering why Denver just wouldn't trade for Rip Hamilton himself if Anthony wants to play with him?
