IF we traded Flynn

Post#1 » by eagle13 » Sat Jan 8, 2011 2:44 am

who do you want for a backup?

Do you want just a rookie like Flynn's 1st year?
Or
What vet (with affordable back up salary) would you want?

I'm personally cool with Harrell, but of the FA list I wouldn't mind bringing in and grooming Trent Edwards or Alex Smith.

In before someone says "I don't want to trade Flynn" even tho "if" is clearly capitalized in your title.

Easier said than done, but I look to draft the next Flynn. That is how teams like the Patriots do it and profit off their good QB development and patience.

I think we've got to sign somebody AND draft somebody. I definitely don't want to have to count on Harrell. Downright scary to think of the drop-off from Rodgers to him.

Would love to get a still some what young QB that someone tossed aside and then let MM try to rebuild him. Someone like Leinart, Alex Smith, etc. Then I'd also continue to develop Harrell as a third stringer.

Leinart, but only so Rodgers can verbally abuse him all day to take out any of his frustations.

EDIT: Like Squeaks in Baseketball.

A year ago you would have said the same thing about Flynn yet he gave us a chance to win against the best team in the NFL when he played the entire game.

Flynn also beat out a second round pick for the backup job, and had two years + behind Rodgers to study and prepare. Harrell hasn't had that luxury.

If we trade Flynn this offseason, I say we at least have to sign a veteran backup. Rodgers concussions should not be taken lightly, because they could signal the beginning of a worrying trend (see: Aikman, Troy and Young, Steve), and we simply cannot rely on a guy who was on the PS for most of the season and a rookie to back up Rodgers.

I just don't see us signing a veteran backup, doesn't seem to be TTs style. I think we will keep Flynn unless MM dictates that Harrell is ready to be the backup. Given his history of grooming QBs I would trust his judgment on that because he has a spotless track record here(retaining Rodgers, cutting Brohm, keeping Flynn).

If you are a legit superbowl contender, then you bring a vet in to backup Rodgers. You could probably get away with a younger guy/reclamation project if he had some starting experience, such as Alex Smith, although I think teh stigma of backing up Rodgers may be too much for him, and he'd probably want to go somewhere where he'd have a chance to win the starting job...

Bulger, Pennington, Collins, Grossman are the type of options I look at in addition to some of the names mentioned. They have to be FAIRLY cheap though.

I just don't buy that theory. The only way it helps is if Rodgers goes down for a medium amount of games.

That list of guys isn't taking us a whole lot further than Graham Harrell if Rodgers is out for the year.

The Colts, Patriots, Saints (this year) among other contenders don't feel that need.

Would he have done the same as a rookie or last year?

That's why the only way I'm trading Flynn is if MM gives the okay that Harrell will be a fine backup. He has proven capable of developing QBs and if he says Harrell is ready to go then lets see what we can get for Flynn. Otherwise hold on to Flynn.

I agree with that, but the question wasn't whether we should trade Flynn, it's if we trade Flynn, how should we react to our backup position. And I just don't feel confident enough in Harrell to go into next season with him as our backup. A decent veteran, preferably a younger one who could ressurect his career under MM's tutelage, would be preferable. I'd look at guys like Leinart, Alex/Troy Smith, or even someone like a Tyler Thigpen.

I would look at Matt Hasselback as a potential back-up next year....
