His self contained play and lack of long lasting defensive sacrifice is what will hold him back. He's like a Dominique Wilkins/Clyde Drexler franchise type. A team might have a small window to reach peak with him but you have to accumulate some worthwhile pieces, otherwise you end up getting a few items off the buffet before it runs out... knowing you could have eaten a lot more. I see Melo as a player with a rapid decline coming fast. I do not want a balloon albatross contract of a player who we've seen the best of while gutting the team. We need to go a different route creating more flexibility and ability to retool on the fly.

At this point, dare I say that James "freakin" Dolan needs to step in and through back channels, deliver the message to Melo's camp, that he has the money concerns covered. Obviously, the knicks are bound by the outlines of any contact. Still, just like they demonstrated to Queen James, that it was possible to make a billion dollars over the life time of a contract in NY, the same is possible for Melo. Look you see Amare's face everywhere now. If Carmelo really wants to be a Knick, money should be the least of his concerns. He may not make a billion, but I bet he'll far exceed any extension he signs with the NETS.
Melo needs to hold his ground and make clear, either the KNICKS or free agency.
