I think after a certain number of years they aren't bounded by the rookie payscale anymore something like splitter at San Antonio. Could be wrong about splitter but I seemed to remember reading that some thought it was a steal that he signed for lesser than the MLE.

Maybe someone else know better ?

Three years after they are drafted, they don't have to sign under rookie scale.

I don't know how Williams works. I think the Thunder would have had to sign him to an NBA contract to have any kind of special rights to him. Lots of guys in the D-league were drafted by teams at some point, I can't imagine they retain their rights like that. Maybe I'm wrong.

Those other guys were undrafted in prev drafts so anyone can sign them. Williams is exclusively ours for 3 seasons.

I think the key thing I read thus far seems to be 1st round guaranteed contract on rookie payscale anytime during first 3 years thereafter can sign for any amount( not sure how long the right belong to a team though).
2nd round unguaranteed and no contract and only team hold rights can sign him up anywhen during next 3 season. Thereafter any team can sign.

A team holds the rights to a first round pick for one year if they do not sign a contract to play professional basketball elsewhere. If they are playing elsewhere, once they stop, the clock starts on the year. So if Rubio stopped playing for Spain tomorrow, the Wolves would have one year to get him signed to a contract before losing his rights.

I can't believe the Thunder have exclusive rights to Williams for three seasons, just doesn't seem right. Isn't the point of D-League that anyone can get called up at any time? Seems to severely limit Williams' options.

Most 2nd rounder get unsigned right after they're selected. Even lesser get selected up from the d-league. It does seem unfair to the players but the rules seems skewered to the teams. What it does guarantee the players are probably more attention from the team scout, a callup to summer league and a caller up to training camp.

since the Oklahoma City Thunder own the rights to four other 66ers -- Cole Aldrich, Latavious Williams, Ryan Reid and Robert Vaden -- the team is left with Larry Owens as their top call-up prospect.

Seems to suggest those 4 are untouchable by the rest.

havent been able to watch more games due to DST timing now and a busier schedule both for NBA and myself. Seems like a nice read in case anyone missed this.

He seems to be doing better, anyone think we will see him in Thunder blue next season?

I don't think Latavious will find a home with the Thunder.

I like his development story and believe he could have a nice career in Europe, but he doesn't offer any specific skill set that would compel the Thunder to bring him back in and I think his personal goals are larger than being a Thunder practice player at this time.

We all wondered why Presti drafted Ryan Reid and some may still wonder why he is currently on the roster. Unlike Latavious I think Reid would be perfectly fine being a Thunder practice player, playing an almost non existent role on the team, except for bringing a workman's mindset and a good attitude to his everyday approach. Reid is a physical player who is willing to sacrifice without complaint. If you've decided to build even your deepest bench with young players that's a pretty huge component of making the chemistry work.
