^ The showdown is going to happen at some point regardless. If Anthony says he won't sing in NJ, then Denver has to say fine, have fun in free agency because we aren't trading you to the Knicks. Then I guess we'll finally see how much Anthony wants that extra money. Might make sense to start the power struggle now, so if Carmelo relents, they still have time to make the deal with NJ, or if he doesn't relent, to work at getting as much as possible from NY.

I wonder if NY would be interested in Rip if they ended up getting Carmelo. Rip/Carmelo's agent wants Rip to go play with Carmelo, wherever that may be.

If thats the case, as long as we get expiring contracts back, I really dont care if its from the Knicks or Nets.

Denver has repeatedly stated that they're not going to get "LeBron'd" by Carmelo. Thus they're unwilling to risk allowing their best player to walk away while they only to get a couple of 2nd round draft picks in return as compensation for a S&T. The Knicks package isn't close to what the Nets are offering but it's a hell of a lot better package than the pittance they would get if Anthony left them as a UFA.

Billups had this to say

“I’ll be ready either way. Of course, Rip is pulling for anything to get out of his current situation. We will see.”

OK, I guess both parties are ready to end their relationship

It is funny how much PT Rip has gotten when he doesn't want to be here (he always acted that way and now Billups says so) and he has played terribly.

It's obviously the other way around : Rip doesn't want to be here anymore because of his low playing time.

3rd quarter, Rip hasn't played at all so far tonight. I hope this is a sign the trade is getting close to being finalized.

But now, it looks like Melo doesn't wanna sign an extension with the NJN, that's why the deal didn't go through. According to a various sources

I read somewhere that Melo said he'd only sign the 3 year/$65 million deal if he was sent to NY. I wonder if the Nets gave the ok to extend it to a 4 or 5 year deal, if that would change his perception on the deal.

If a player wants to extend during his contract (can only be done in the last year) three years is the max amount of years.

Yeah, Melo would be dumb to sign this extension. It sounds like even existing contracts will be cut down with the new CBA. With a lowered salary cap and lower overall salary, a contract with 20 mil a year would kill a franchise. They can't allow existing contracts to stay. It'd be better for him to wait and get the new max amount of years (maybe four?).

See that's a tough call... IMO the player will fight to the end to at least retain a fair % of existing contracts... the owners can't claim a major reduction in the BRI... however they will eventually win most of the battles due to the % of teams losing $'s... but the players have more to gain by waiting out the negotiations to protect their current deals.

As of right now 10% of the players salaries are held in escrow accounts and then payed back to the owners. Stern wants a 30% reduction in salaries so they would just increase the escrow accounts.

The rub is that the money is shared evenly by the owners so Jerry Buss pays out 90 mil in salary but his 10% payback is not 9 mil. Its closer to 7. Conversley Sterling pays out 40 mil but recieves much more than 4. 150% more because he gets the same 7 mil as the other owners. So he gets a 16% payback instead of 10%. Thats why hes so hated by owners and players alike.

What if the 4 year contract max is set to 65 million?

According to Marc Spears:

Ty Lawson on Nugs trade rumors: "They’re leaving and then I get a chance to step up and show my game. It’s bittersweet." Twitter

Very interesting.....

I sure as hell hope that Lawson knows something that the rest of the world doesn't because right now this deal seems all but dead to me!!!

Nothing is official yet, and Nuggets executives have rarely spoken publicly about their intentions during the drawn-out trade talks. But sources have said Denver is discussing a blockbuster trade that would send not only Melo to New Jersey but also all-star guard Chauncey Billups, in addition to unloading Al Harrington and expendable bench players such as Anthony Carter and Shelden Williams. This whole thing is disgusting. The players seem to have all the power in the NBA now. It's not the same and it's ruining basketball.
