He didn't say playing for the Knicks was his ultimate dream. He said it would be anybody's ultimate dream to go back to where they're from and play basketball. He was born in Brooklyn. Not exactly a strong admission that he wants to play for the Knicks, when the comment had nothing to do with them, but the area.
It's certainly a scenario he has to consider. Could they possibly put together a contending team in 2-3 seasons? Yes. Is that a sure thing, that he should base his decision on? Hardly.
And what exactly makes the Knicks such a sure thing to become a title contender in the next couple years? Are they going to have cap space to go sign someone else? Do they have draft picks to find players? Assuming they get Melo, their flexibility going forward is pretty much shot. Hell, who knows if they'll even be able to re-sign Chandler. Of course if they do(like Walsh guaranteed), then they couldn't sign Paul in 2012.
Of course it's just my opinion, but that team wouldn't be much more than a perennial 2nd round exit, with losing in the ECF probably the best case scenario. If that was all his goal was, he'd just stay in Denver, and continue what they've been doing.
