You look at portland when they had rasheed as the main man they were legit contenders until zbo took away the majority of the shots. When he was with the knicks their record also was below 50 percent. Zbo will get his stats but he isn't a winner. It so happend that gasol can cover up a lot of his bases because he is 7 feet. By going thorugh zbo look what it's done to Mayo's development. Even Gay is supposed to be the primary option not Zbo. You guys extend him like conley and you still be the vancouver grizzlies all over again when they extended bryant reeves.
You know mayo like jamal crawford, when he gets traded to another team; he's going to flourish again so I'm not saying zbo is a bad player. He just doesn't make the players around him better.
Gasol is also a dangerous free agent to re sign, as if he is content with not improving and becoming fat again you will be stuck with a libaility. Before the trade deadline it's not mayo that should be leaving; I'm no mayo fan but he is clearly your second most talented player after gay. The guys should be leaving should be z bo. Gasol should only be re signed if he can meet stipulations.
book it! Your onwer and some of you fans are too naive to see this coming. We will revisit this post in 1 year and see what you grizzlie bears have to say.

Cleveland Receives: Hasheem Thabeet, and 2012 1st Round Pick (Memphis)
• Memphis Trades: Hasheem Thabeet, and 2012 1st Round Pick (Memphis)
Memphis Receives: Exception, 2013 1st Round Pick (Miami) and $3 Million Cash
Reasons:
o Cleveland Cavaliers: Take a shot at a young center that has all of the physical tools to be a viable player in this league. Also acquire a higher draft pick in the deap 2012 draft class.
o Memphis Grizzlies: Significant financial relief. Gain a trade exception they could potentially use but likely will let expire. Get $3 Million in Cash. Give up a future 1st but acquire a lower 1st rounder so not too big of a loss.
Awful - had the Grizz been that interested in just saving cash, they wouldn't have exercised his contract for next season.
Downtown wrote:I've never got the whole "Memphis needs to trade players for salary relief" arguement.
They are at $67mil this season. Out of the 30 teams, the middle teams are at $66mil. So Memphis is right in the middle of the pack. After this season ends they will be at $40mil. Zach Randolph has remarked back in the fall that he wanted an extention and was willing to take less money than he earns this season. Even if they give Marc Gasol $12mil, they should be right around the same team salary as this season with him and Randolph at $15mil.
People could be correct that Heisley will look to cheapen out, but given where they are this season one could argue that they can easily handle new deals for both Randolph and Gasol and be just fine. It's the summer of 2012 when Mayo will be up for renewal that a decision will need to be made.
But if I'm an owner that has pledged $67mil this season, has repeatedly stated that the playoffs are the goal, not rebuilding, I wouldn't be selling off my assets for nothing and running for the hills now. Right now they need to follow the course through. Plus with the new CBA in negotiations the financial picture might get better. It's not salary dump time. He would look like an idiot to bail out half way through the campaign.

They are definitely shopping Thabeet for cap space. Marc Gasol is going to command a sizeable contract this offseason. They are also going to face heavy competition for Zach Randolph (should they choose to resign him) OJ May is facing restricted free agency as well. They already have Rudy Gay on max money. Mike Conley also has a rich deal. Too much money tied up and Thabeet is the player they would most like to move so they can save on his remaining salary. Picking up the option was a means to increase his value while also making it more essential to move him urgently. Why would a team trade for him if they know they can just sign him in the upcoming offseason? Picking up the option ensures that more teams would try and trade for him now rather than wait for another year.
jefe wrote:Agreed. The easiest way to get rid of Thabeet's salary clearly is to pick up his option and then trade him in a salary dump rather than declining to pick up his option and letting him kick rocks.
