yes, he will be a great set up man from the right side. give q more options from the pen, he still has a plus fast ball and good experience. great team leader also.

Grienke to the Brewers. Another rival gets better. Offseason from Hell continues.

Grienke ain't that special he is 60-67 with a 3.82 ERA in six full seasons.

We better trade for Garza now. Unbelievable. Brewers had balls to give up that much.

Supposedly the Cubs are in the Brandon Webb sweepstakes. He could be another low risk/high reward type player.

60-67 on a Kansas City team that is horrible

Greinke had a 2.16 era in 2009 and won the Cy Young. He had a down year last year but is still a great talent even though Milwaukee did give up a lot.

Re: 2010-2011 Chicago Cubs offseason thread
who will be our starting OFs? will fukudome get another chance? can brett jackson contribute this year? personally, i would like to somehow trade byrd (when the stock is high) for a starting pitcher or a decent 2nd baseman and start jackson at center along with soriano at left, colvin at right. this way it gives us a speedy cf who can also lead off and power hitters at the corner of positions.

Jackson probably won't be up until September, he needs more time. We'll probably just use a 4 man rotation with Fukudome/Soriano/Colvin/Byrd.

Re: 2010-2011 Chicago Cubs offseason thread
I'm fairly content with our outfield as it stands. We have to live with Soriano but his power can make up for his low OBP and suspect defense. Byrd was very solid last year even though his second half was meh. And Tyler Colvin is awesome, a very young guy who hits for power. I love him.
The only problem is Fukudome. And the problem is NOT his play. He actually had his best statistical year last season and he always gets on base while playing great defense. The problem is he is getting paid too much to be a 4th outfielder. The lack of playing time may inhibit any positive trade value at the deadline. The good news is he can play both center and right so he doesn't necessarily need to take many at bats from Colvin.

Re: 2010-2011 Chicago Cubs offseason thread
Fukudome is actually an above average 4th outfielder. You could argue he's better than a lot of 3rd outfielders. The problem is he gets paid too much.
14 mil should be .275 avg 12-20 HR 65-85 RBI 12-15 SB and fringe gold glove performance
instead he gives us .260 10-12 and 45-55RBI 5-7SB with good, sometimes great defense, which is worth a third of what he's getting.
Its ok though with Colvin at rookie rates, Byrd at a bargain we can handle Soriano and Fukudome in the double digits. This year we say bye bye to fukudome. Someone will be looking for a fourth outfielder this year and he's gonna be it.

Re: 2010-2011 Chicago Cubs offseason thread
We just added a quality SP in Garza and have no more money to spend on expensive free agents. We already have our top 3 guys set with like 4 guys vying for the last 2 SP spots. I think we're done addressing pitching for now, unless we trade away one of our SP's.
Garza
Dempster
Zambrano
Wells
Gorzo
Silva
Marshall
Cashner
We have plenty of depth and I have to believe we'll have one of Marshall and Gorzo starting because otherwise we'd have zero lefty SP's.

Re: 2010-2011 Chicago Cubs offseason thread
Per the WT guess you can throw Russell in there as well

The Cubs will consider lefty James Russell as well as right-hander Andrew Cashner for the rotation and let them compete in Spring Training with the other pitchers on the roster.
Manager Mike Quade plans to talk to pitching coach Mark Riggins as well as Russell and Cashner this week.

And we officialy have no left handed starters (looks like Russel or Marshall will be forced into starting this year). Gorzo to the Nats for 3 prospects.

Burgess was their #4 overall prospect in 2009 now he struggled to hit this year as a 21 year old in A ball, which is definitely a concern, but hopefully he can turn it around.
The Cubs reportedly will receive Michael Burgess, a 22-year-old outfielder with a strong arm, and two mid-level pitchers for Gorzelanny, who was made expendable by the surplus of starting pitchers. Gorzelanny came over to the Cubs from Pittsburgh, along with John Grabow, at the trade deadline in 2009.
