Is your coach holding you back?

Post#1 » by Clangus » Mon Jan 17, 2011 5:38 am

I have watched a fair few Pacers games this year and I have to say that I think the coach is misusing a number of your players. But i could be wrong so I am asking you guys who are closer than me to the situation. Is O'Brien holding you back.

My thoughts

- Collison: clearly a pick and roll PG. HE excels at that and yet Jim has your boys running "the headless chicken" offense. Collison seems to struggle with this offense.

- Hibbert : Not sure about misused, but he was terrific early on and has since fallen off a cliff - confidence issues according to the fact that he went to see a sports psyche about it. I remember reading numerous times through the year about O'Brien ripping Hibbert in the media. Even after a good game he would say something like "Roy knows we expect more than that out of him." I think his tough love approach is doing more harm than good.

- Granger: His efficiency has fallen off this year. Cant really say why for sure, but it looks like he is taking more tough contested jumpers than last year. Again I point to the offensive system. Granger simply not being given the ball in spots where he can be effective.

Over all my feeling is that if a better system was used that highlighted Collisions strengths it would work better for everyone. I know that Hibbert works well out of the high post and that J.O has run alot of the offense through him there (not sure about recently but certainly early on) and is a hell of a passer, I just think that Collison running the offense would work a shite load better.

So guys tell me, am I way off? What would you say about JO's coaching etc?

Also - Why the hell doesn't Hibbert have a big man coach on the staff? Stupid. You cant tell me Vitaly Potapenko is going to be the guy to help Hibbert reach his potential?!

You're right about everything. We do need a big man coach too. Hopefully Larry Bird cleans out the entire coaching staff. I think O'Brien knows he's probably gone or why would he bring in McCarty and Potapenko?

Is there an answer that's yessier than "hell **** yes"? Because whatever the yessiest is, that's the yes that I want to answer with.

We know our coaching is bad. Jim blurs the line on positions so much that it is apparent our players are often playing out of position. We do not have a traditional lineup, although just recently we inserted our best 4 and now we're playing a little better. Basically Jim prefers four wings, and a post player.

Your post is spot on, especially about Darren. Which is why I want a new coach & David West in the offseason.

O'Brien must be on thin ice. Just must me. This is just too embarrassing.

need to petition a fire JO'B chant at the games. Maybe squad 55 (or what ever they are called) can do it?

I hope it's not too late, and the damage isn't irreparable, but I blame O'Brien 100% for Hibbert's rapid decline. It just remains to be seen if a different coach can restore his shattered confidence or if the damage is permanent.

I've Always loved Larry Bird, but if he doesn't get rid of this clod, and SOON, I'm done with this team. I don't imagine my financial contributions at the two or three games I can afford to attend a year mean much in the larger scheme of things, but it's something I can do. And if enough others feel the same way, maybe something will be done.

Larry Bird tries to stay away from what O'Brien is doing, which is fine. Bird doesn't want Obie here next season.

While i may be wrong, but, didn't he start going down like RIGHT after O'Brien threw a jab to the media about Hibbert? I can't remember exactly what he said, but something along the lines of "Hibbert hasn't improved much yet and still has a long way to go"? I remember seeing that and being like WTF... then noticed through box scores a massive drop off.

Yes, it was right around when JOB's quote came out. So there's that, saying that Paul George wasn't playing good basketball (which was a while ago and long before he actually got any noteworthy PT), and going back to last year - calling McBob's career high in a loss "irrelevant."

If you're talking about a veteran like Wade or Dirk or Duncan, you're more able to get away with that. But to say that about promising, yet still up-and-coming players who are still trying to find their footing in the league? Idiot.

But between this and the fact that we've now fallen to the 8th seed and have been overtaken by Philly, Jim O'Brien MUST go. I don't see ANY logic to keeping him around at this point. Let's try to salvage this season before JOB pisses off Danny even more and destroys Roy. Who cares if he's tweaked his offense and subsequently Collison has picked up his game? I'm sure we can find another coach out there who's smart enough to run for pick-and-roll with DC. You know...like...any mediocre-good coach.

I'm honestly to the point where whenever JOB shows up on camera while I'm watching a game, I literally want to punch my TV.

Its our lack of talent. Coach can't fix no talent.

Coach ain't responsible for why our players suck. Including Collison.

Sure. I'll crawl back into my hole after the Pacers have more than 2 NBA starting caliber players on the team.

So Danny isnt a starter on other teams? Roy isnt a starter on other teams? DC isnt a starter?

Give us a real coach that can bring talent out in players and see what happens...

Would any team start Roy with what he's doing in december and january?

How good is Collison exactly? His numbers don't blow you away when he isn't playing with the royal jelly fed to him.

JOB strikes me as the type of person who thinks the team only wins when they execute " his system " and loses because they dont know what they are doing.

IMO he only played Tyler 36 minutes because he wanted him to fail ( why else drop his minutes back down to 15? ) and only used pick and pops to try and prove it wouldnt work. Now the offense is back to where it was.. full of screens and long jumpshots.

Collison should just turn into a ball hog and call screens for himself .. Offense works much better when the ball is in his hands.
