Re: Randolph deal in place?

The Nuggets just totally screwed themselves. If even half of the rumors about what NJ was offering were true they were too much. Denver should have closed that deal and walked away smiling. Now they'll get a recycled first and (if they're lucky) Landry Fields from the Knicks and have to count their blessings for getting anything at all.
The really interesting question now is what other good players does Denver send out for salary reasons?

Re: Randolph deal in place?
Just for sh*ts and giggles I plugged some stuff into the trade machine..
NYK out: Curry, Gallinari, Randolph
NYK in: Carmelo Anthony, Jonny Flynn
Den out: Melo, Billups
Den in: Gallo, Tolliver, Curry, Mem and Utah 1sts
Min out: Flynn, Tolliver, Utah and Mem 1sts
Min in: Randolph, Billups
I strongly doubt it plays out this well for the Wolves, but it's fun to think about. It also works if NYK throws in Landry Fields, but I would watch to see if the Knicks don't manage to hang on to him.

Re: Randolph deal in place?
I would honestly be pretty upset with that deal. An upgrade in value from Telfair to Flynn, Tolliver, and another 1st for Billups seems like solid value, but he doesn't make us a playoff team, he'd definitely declining in play, and his contract stops us from doing any other deals.
I'd rather just do the rumored Telfair + Utah 1st (or even Memphis 1st) over that deal.

So basically the Memphis 1st and Tolliver for the right to pay a declining Billups' a huge salary? No thanks.

Well if the Nyets are truly out of the Melo sweepstakes it looks like it just became more plausible that Randolph could be a Wolf. Issue is whether we can find him minutes.

I'd pay Billups' salary for two years (with Glen Taylor's money, ahem). Especially with Rubio coming over. I think that Billups and Rubio, with Love, Beasley and Darko making reasonably expectable growth puts us very near to, or in the playoffs next year, and definitely the year after. Then Billups is a free agent, we let him go and Rubio moves into the starting role. But like I said, I'm sure it wouldn't be so easy...

Re: Randolph deal in place?
Billups made it fairly clear he doesn't want to leave Denver and only changed his mind at the prospect of playing on another playoff team in NJ with Melo and Rip. We are neither, so I wouldn't pay money for a guy that wouldn't show anyway.
If we get roped into a Melo deal I'd rather do something like this;
New York gives - Danilo Gallinari, Timofey Mozgov, Anthony Randolph, Eddy Curry
New York receives - Carmelo Anthony, Sebastian Telfair, Kosta Koufos
Denver gives - Carmelo Anthony, Arron Afflalo
Denver receives - Danilo Gallinari, Timofey Mozgov, Memphis 1st, (Utah 1st?), 12 mil TPE
Minnesota gives - Memphis 1st, (Utah 1st?), Sebastian Telfair, Kosta Koufos
Minnesota receives - Eddy Curry, Anthony Randolph, Arron Afflalo
New York gets their man while being able to keep Chandler and Fields, if Denver wanted you could substitute Gallinari and Chandler. They also get some depth with Koufos and Telfair. Denver loses Anthony and Afflalo but get Gallinari, a raw big to build with, possibly 2 1sts and a huge TPE that would (I think) get them under the lux. And we get Randolph that we covet and an under control, 3 point shooting Brewer-type to round out the line up.
I don't know how realistic it is but it fills everyone's needs.

Shouldn't be a problem with Darko "Glass Ankles" Milicic on the team.

If Denver does a deal they want to shed salary beyond just Carmelo. Their goal is to get under the cap. To do so the players they would want/need to trade are:
Billups, 13mil, 2 yrs
Nene, 11mil, 2 yrs
Kevin Martin, 16mil, 1 yr
Afflalo is awesome, and I would love to pick him up, but Denver is going to want to keep all the affordable talent they can, and that's Afflalo. On the other hand, if Kahn can swing it, I'd say hell yeah.

Re: Randolph deal in place?
They don't really need to trade those players though. The deal I posted, while not actually getting them under the luxury tax line, gets them to within 2 mil of it. Then, if need be, they can trade a guy like Martin using the 125 rule and save 1-3 mil off of that.
The problem with saving them money is that the teams they're currently looking at like Houston, New York, the Clippers or Chicago can't give them the instant savings they desperately want. All they can off is future savings in the form of expiring contracts, which holds less appeal. Our capspace, all things considered, could save them in the ball park of $25 million. Is Afflalo worth that, especially if we're sending our two picks their way as well?

Yea, I'd love Afflalo on this team, but I think the only way we are getting him in some kind of three way is if we take on Harrington's disgusting contract, and I really dont want to do that

The Wiretap is saying Portland is now a likely destination for Randolph. Wouldn't that hurt if he became a monster for them when we had a chance to acquire him? And since it is the Timberwolves, he almost certainly will.

Re: Randolph deal in place?
From a post on rubechat:
http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/knicks/playin_it_cool_zsO7KvQnSsZDD5s550Y2NI
SALT LAKE CITY -- Of the concerns team president Donnie Walsh has in breaking up the Knicks for Carmelo Anthony, one of them is having to use Anthony Randolph in a deal with the Timberwolves for a first-round pick, The Post has learned.
With a new report suggesting Anthony may not sign an extension with the Nets, with that three-team deal on hold and Amar'e Stoudemire texting Anthony to tell him to spurn Jersey, the Knicks have some new life, though they still appear long shots.
The best-case scenario for the 22-16 Knicks, who lost 131-125 to the Jazz last night, is for the Nuggets to get desperate if Anthony officially shuns the Nets and demands a New York trade. The Rockets reportedly will swoop in, too, and could be willing to offer more than Walsh.
The Knicks feel Anthony holds all the cards, and Walsh plans to play the cards he has carefully, not desperately. He is unwilling to give up too much for Anthony, team sources said yesterday.
Walsh is waffling on whether he even wants to part with Randolph to gain a first-round pick from the Timberwolves, a selection he possibly would have to ship with two of three prospects -- Danilo Gallinari, rookie sensation Landry Fields or restricted free agent Wilson Chandler.
Walsh will not give up three of those four players, knowing the Knicks' biggest need is a legit starting center. Sources said restricted free agents Marc Gasol and Clippers 7-footer DeAndre Jordan are squarely on the radar this summer, and that's a big priority.
For now, the Knicks wait patiently on the periphery, realizing Anthony's advisors are eager to drag them into the race to give the Nets competition. The Knicks' chances, sources say, have been helped slightly because the prospects who could be available to Denver have played well.
Having Stoudemire's support on a Anthony trade is also a factor, league sources believe.
On Monday, the Nuggets reportedly made a threat to Nets management about trading him to the Knicks if leaks on their trade talks don't stop.
Even by gaining a first-round pick to trade, it still may not be enough to satisfy Denver, which would get two first-rounders from the Nets.
Walsh has hoped Anthony's desire to play for the Knicks would prompt him to go to free agency this summer when the Knicks have cap room.
With the Knicks winning, developing a great chemistry and having players at Anthony's position, but not at center, Walsh is more likely to give a modest proposal unsuitable to the Nuggets.
Walsh believes the club has a lot of solid small-forward types such as Anthony but what they need is a "beast" of a center to get them to the next level.
The Knicks have for months been long shots for Anthony because they don't have two suitable first-round picks to offer in a deal like the Nets do. Nevertheless, the Knicks, according to a league source, have a contingent deal in place with Minnesota to trade Randolph for a Timberwolves 2011 first-round pick. The Knicks have to own a first-round pick this season because they league rules prohibit them from going two straight years without one.
Though the 6-foot-11 Randolph is out of the rotation and seemingly off coach Mike D'Antoni's radar, Walsh is unsure he wants to give up on him because he is just 21 years old, and size and athleticism is a rare commodity. D'Antoni, however, does not like Randolph's in-game demeanor and he doesn't carry a high-enough motor.
D'Antoni has talked about developing 7-foot-1 center Timofey Mozgov for later this season, making a comparison to Toney Douglas' rookie season. Douglas took over the starting point guard role in the final month when D'Antoni felt he was ready for it.

Re: Randolph deal in place?
Tried to read back through this thread and better understand what NY is thinking about with regards to AR.
Is the speculation that they only want the first for Randolph if they are going to send it to Denver? Or do we have any indications that it might happen on the 24th either way?
Thanks
