AK is the Nets fall back plan?

Post#1 » by Fido » Wed Jan 19, 2011 7:54 pm

Just read on wiretap that if the Nets can't get Carmelo (which is sounding more and more like they are at an impasse) they are going to target AK. I wonder what they would be willing to move in a deal like that? While I like AK, I'd be seriously interested in exploring possibilities there. I know there is a link to the owner but didn't know the Nets had strong interest--unless this is just a negotiation tactic to show Denver they aren't completely desperate to get Carmelo at any cost. Maybe the deadline will be more interesting than I thought....

If they want AK I think they will wait until the summer. His contract is not up for extension, so they would have little to gain in getting him earlier than that. AK, alone, will also not increase their playoff chances this year.

Exactly. I have a lot of trouble believing they'd trade any assets, when they can just court him in free agency.

This complicates my hope that he re-signs in Utah for the MLE.

I don't see this as any threat to us. AK has repeated stated how badly he wants to remain here with the Jazz. The only reason he would go over there is if they throw way too much money at him for him to resist but even then...I feel as if AK would value loyalty and comfort/familiarity over money.

If they want to overpay him then let them do it. Getting AK to replace Melo is pretty sad actually.....

word is the carmelo deal just fell through. the nets are done trying to trade for him. if ak is the fall back, i would expect KOC to be getting a call pretty soon if not already.

The deal may already be in place actually. If you remember when we traded Stevenson for Giricek we played Orlando that night, and then Giricek essentially flew to Indiana with the team for their next game.

It's possible tonight could be AK's last game with the Jazz.

Murphy and Humphries is the trade that cuts 2.7(doubled) million this year and protects the after the season cap.

Smart move by the Nets to back out of this deal. I think Melo's agent was just playing them against the Knicks.

I agree. They might just waive one and then sign Jeffers who is doing well in Iowa if they did this. It eats some of the 5 mil in savings. They could also flip Hump with a 2nd to a third team for a Peter Fehse.

I can't see teh Jazz taking taht big of a hit to their playoff hopes for so little savings. Even if NJ threw in 3mil I still don't think the Jazz would bite.
"Thibs called back and wanted more picks," said Jorge Sedano. "And Pat Riley, literally, I was told, called him a mother-bleeper and hung up the phone."

Too bad NJ didn't realize this when we wanted to trade up in the draft.

I'm very surprised Humphries is doing well now. He sucked here, in Toronto, and in Dallas . . . and then all of a sudden, he's a better rebounder than Millsap in NJ.

Not for Harris--with Deron running the point and Watson/Price doing fine in back up roles there is no need to add another player to that mix.
