Interested in another Build a Team?

Post#1 » by Miklo » Fri Jan 21, 2011 1:42 am

NOTE: I un-stickied the BAT final scores thread but it can be found here: http://forums.realgm.com/boards/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=1084801

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alrighty, so I know some people were frustrated with me for taking a long time with the later steps of the Build a Team.

But there's been lots of interest in doing a Build a Team 2 so I just wanted to get a feel for who might be interested.

If we did it I'd be willing to deal with a lot of it but we'd get a few people helping out so it would never get stuck up because I had a busy day or something.

The Question...

Would you be interested in participating in a Build a Team game, either just a draft like the first one or a league that continues afterwards - PLEASE ONLY STATE YOUR INTEREST IF YOU CAN COMMIT TO BEING ACTIVE EVERY DAY THROUGHOUT THE DRAFT - we'll be a lot quicker to boot someone for not being active if we do it again.

2 ways it can be done

1. Just a draft and scoring of some kind, like we did last time. If we did this we'd obviously make some modifications from learning the first time around, but the basic format would be the same.

2. A draft, and then you continue as your team's GM - TASTIC and I discussed this last time around - not a sim league, but GMing a team, making trades with other teams, then when offseason comes, re-signing players, signing free agents, rookie draft. We'd hammer out more particulars later but that's the general option.

So, everyone please post if you are interested and can seriously commit as stated earlier. If you are interested, please give some input on the two options. If you did the first Build a Team and are NOT interested, could you also please post saying you're out - just so we can get a feel for how many will be dropping.

I'm interested in getting in on the front end of this one instead of drafting three rounds too late in place of someone else.

Completely committed.

And I'll take the Suns moniker!!!! Mwuahaha!

And just my opinion, because I've done it both ways, but it may be hard to combine the draft and GM a team since people are normally so smitten with the players that they draft. This opposed to inheriting the 76ers in a GM a Team game and having to trade Brand's contract as a part of the strategy.

I'm up for either of the two options, but the trading portion takes uber involved participants.

Interesting point about continuing it with people attached to their players...do you have any other ideas for ways to "spice it up" - make it a little more than just the draft?

Also as an FYI if we do this we won't have a post count limit - one of the draws of doing it again would be to get to know some of our newer posters, and last time the problem wasn'twith new posters anyway - some of our best GM's were new.

So if we did it I would encourage and hope some of the newer Suns board members to be involved, as long as they can make the time commitment!

I'd do it. I do think only the draft is a little plain and low-key, but the second option might be TOO complicated. I mean, people like me don't know much about cap management, salaries, and what not and we would struggle. Something in between would be nice.

edit: nvm i should probably focus on schoolwork more

I mainly lurk, but I would definately do it again. Either from scratch or continuing on. It would be interesting with free agents, expiring deals, and drafting rookies.

Its easy, just use the ESPN trade machine to figure the cap/salary info out.

I just threw my choice out there just in case.

But i think we should randomize it. Who ever gets #1 chooses his team, and so on and so on.

Do a fantasy draft, then 2 weeks of trading for the 10-11 season. Then have a panel of judges rank teams which would "seed" playoffs and also seed draft picks.

You can use one of various sources to determine the draft lotto. Then you let the teams go through FA using all the cap restrictions and exceptions (this rewards cap smart teams). You woulduse the same panel to judge where each player would go. IE Carmelo would go to team x in the offseason because of x, y, and z.

Then two more weeks of trading in the 11-12 season and the final judging for the post season.

You have to keep it moving. A quick pace and resolution makes it fun. This style also involves more strategy due to the salary cap. The next draft is fun and it then makes teams that acquire multiple picks more competitive.

Yes I'm in. Either option is fine. Although I would vote for number 2 as it would be something new.

I'll take the Golden State Warriors!
