It becomes more clear every passing game that this team isnt a playoff team and greatly needs to rebuild its core going forward. Mats is the key here seeing hes our teams best player and is very attractive to contenders looking to make a run and having him on contract just for this season. Trading him would greatly aid in the rebuilding process as we could add a decent young player, a pick and a upper prospect. With Peddie saying thru the media recently that any deal with Sundin would have to be brough to the board, it seems veru obvious they have bantered around the likely possibilty that he will be traded. Lets here posters view on where he should be traded and what they would like to get back from that team.
With the swedish connection and the fact the Red Wings are legit contenders, they seem like the best fit for Mats imo. This is what Id like to get back from them.
Filpula
Jakub Kindl
2008 first round pick
detroit might see that as a steep price to pay but adding Mats would almost make them a shoe-in to win the cup.

I definitely think Mats is on the block and that he is being shopped around...
Having said that, as I'm a big fan of his, I hope he will be here next year and will remain a Leaf for life...
In the event he is traded some deals I would do are the one mentioned above and...
From Anaheim
Bobby Ryan and Edmonton's first this year

I think both teams would be overpaying. This is going to be a good draft so Anaheim should keep Edmonton's pick.

I agree they would be over paying but considering what they are getting, it would pretty near ensure that they are cup contenders, with a great chance to take it all...
Prospects and Draft choices are just that, unknown commodities and trading a great player like Mats is not something that should be done, for a hand full of suspect prospects and long shot draft choices...
Bobby Ryan is a blue chip prospect and as you have eluded to, Edmonton's pick in this draft is a very good one and could be in the lottery come June and in my opinion, it's a stiff price but one I would hold out for. In the Detroit scenario Filppula and Kindl are good prospects but the draft choice, is like last in the first round and would actually be more like a second so this is fall back deal...
Another Deal has the Canucks dealing
Luc Bourdon,
Pat White
Michael Grabner and their first
for Sundin and ?
Again good prospects and fair draft choice (not as good as Ryan though)...

Im sorry but I wouldnt call a possible #1, #2 or #3 overall pick a longshot draft pick. I dont see why Anaheim would trade Edmontons pick seeing it has a very realistic chance at getting them one of Stamkos, Doughty or Pietrangelo for a rental player, if when its Mats Sundin. If they make that trade and dont win the cup it will look like a horrendous trade down the road.

Basically, I would look at any playoff contending team in the West aside from Dallas because they all have good young talent that we can use. If we trade him east then you make that team over pay for him. ESPECIALLY if it's Montreal or Ottawa.
But the teams I'd especially be looking at are Anaheim and San Jose

I agree but when your talking, say Detroits 1st, that is going to be a longshot, as they are maybe top team and will choose last in the first round unless you get very good players and prospects that choice is almost non existant more like a second rounder...
Bobby Ryan and Edmonton's first, that is a different matter.
Ryan is already an elite player and as it stands now Edmonton's first would be a lottery pick, that to me is a good trade but others in the list I posted like...
MIKE MILBURY
Former New York Islanders GM
I would trade Sundin to New Jersey for ...
Nicklas Bergfors, RW. 20 years old. New Jersey's first-round pick, 23rd overall, in 2005, 2008 first-round draft pick..
This scenario contain a good prospect and a 1st but Bergfors is not even close to Ryan as a prospect and the Devil's 1st as it stands will be between 23-29 not a lottery pick at all (so a longshot)...

Mike Milbury was misquoted. If he was making the deal, it would be to the Islanders for 4 guys he would immediately deal to someone else for a aging forward who could help for the stretch run. then he'd take his first round pick this year and swap it to someone else for their pick, just for **** and giggles, then he'd think of something else stupid and useless to do.

Burke won't give up that Edmonton 1st IMO. But hey, I'll take Staal+1st from Pitts for Sundin
I truly think that JFJ can fight and argue and even come close to trying to incorporate Staal in a deal from Pittsburgh, because of his terrible season so far. But I do like to dream occassionally, and I'm not sure Pittsburgh would really want Sundin, but my o my:
Malkin-Sundin-Crosby

from a senator fan's perspective I really can't see them dealing any of the defensemen away, if they traded meszaros in the package for sundin, it would leave them with luke richardson and shubert playing heavy minutes and leaves them with nothing as a backup in case of injury. That is unless they thought brian lee was ready for the big times after half a year of pro hockey or they had a lot of faith in nycholat.
that and I can't for the life of me seeing the leafs trading their captain to ottawa, that would be surreal
