Bucher also said that they wont trade Randolph for the 1st rounder until they know there is a deal in place for carmelo. Obviously smart and it will let us know when this trade is going to go through, a precursor.

Melo is not leaving Denver to sign in Houston. He isn't just getting out of there because he is tired of Colorado.

I was referring tio signing with NY outright and not wanting a S&T, like the majority of other stars who want their $$$$.

I think it's in our best interest to make a substantive offer to try to get something done now. It would put us in a position to do well in the playoffs, would obviously remove any lingering uncertainties, and as many have pointed out, signing him in the offseason won't really be free because of Chandler contractual issues and the MLE issue.

That doesn't, however, mean we shouldn't drive a hard bargain. It is worth it to beat out rental offers - but we should be able to do that without giving up everything Denver might like. I'd be okay with giving up 2 out of Gallo/Chandler/Randolph/Fields + a pick, but not more than that. And if we give up 2 out of the 4, then I wouldn't take back a contract unless it's Nene. If they want us to take Harrington, then they only get 1 out of those 4. That probably changes IF Donnie gets reliable information that the Nuggets have a superior offer elsewhere. But right now it doesn't look as if that's the case.

One a side note - there's no chance in hell Carmelo signs with Houston. None.

It will likely happen at the trade deadline. Denver knows he wants to go to NY, but if they can find someone willing to trade w/o an extension, like Houston, it puts a lot of pressure on NY to overpay. This could backfire, hopefully we can find a way to keep Landry Fields.

IDK but I'd trust Ric Bucher's sources over Michael Kay's basketball source.

What the heck is John Barry's deal? This guy seriously doesn't want Melo in NY. Saying why would Denver want anything NY has to offer and it would've been better if Melo went to Jersey....

Still four weeks before the trade deadline. The Nuggets are right to wait for a better offer. They probably know the Knicks offer will still be on the table in one month.

If it's true then Walsh just needs to wait and make the same offer just before the trade deadline. Take it or leave it. If Melo keeps saying he only sign an extension with the Knicks then either the Nuggets will cave in or they will play poker til the end and keep Melo until the end of the season and hope he will sign an extension with them before june 30.

The good thing about that is Melo knows now the Knicks tried and made an offer. The Nuggets can't tell him the Knicks don't want to give up assets for him in order to push him to accept a trade to another team.

Saved me 17 pages of reading. Thanks Koz.

I think the only way we're going to get him via trade this season is if we find another team. It has to be someone that has interest in Galo or Chandler that would give up a mid 2011 or 2012 pick, or a young player of value.

The good news here is, regardless, it appears Melo WILL be a KNICK. Either at the deadline (in a trade) or by summer (in Free Agency). He has made that possible by letting all the league know he won't sign an extension with anyone but NY.

Now we might have individual reasons why we want him sooner or later. I REALLY don't want to lose Fields, since he does so much of the intangibles for this team. But when it comes to a player of Melo's caliber, you do what you have to do.

Anyway, Houston can threaten to "rent" Melo if they want. But so what... he can still walk right into our hands come July 1. So the question becomes, is Denver willing to deal FAIRLY with us? Or are they mad and looking to deal with anybody but us just out of spite?

Something else to chew on, Denver reportedly has little intrest in Chandler because he would need to be resigned. Add to that Denver is entertaining offers from NJ, Hou and maybe GS. While we know NJ would never do a deal that will help us, maybe Hou or GS will. While both wouldn't mind "renting" melo, they would have to like the idea of landing a guy like Chandler and having a leg up in signing him long term.

NY Knicks trade:
Eddy Curry (Den)
Bill Walker (Den)
Wilson Chandler (Hou)
2011 first round pick (acquired by trading ARandolf)

Denver Nuggets trade:
Carmelo Anthony (NY)

Houston Rockets trade:
Jordan Hill (Den)
NY Knicks 2012 first round pick (Den)

Denver still gets a young cheap talent in Jordan Hill. Another guy with limited upside in Bill Walker, and 2 first round picks. May have to swap out Bill Walker with Landry Fields, but I'm hopping getting an extra first rounder will make them accept Walker as opposed to Fields

If Denver was insisting that we take Al Harrington, we could squeze him under our cap if we sent Kelenna Azubuike's expiring deal their way. ARandolf would have to be dealt first, but we keep hearing that's not an issue

What teams out there would be interested in actually signing Chandler this off-season? Serious question. Who has the capspace and who would be willing to throw big money his way?

They have a lot of PFs, not that many SFs. Even Battier who starts at SF is more of a tweener.

At 6'5 Lee is more of a SG and Williams has played in 4 games all year. Budinger is a JAG (just another guy) and as I said Battier is a tweener and may be better coming off the bench. Or they use Wilson Chandler coming off the bench, but it's a clear upgrade for them.
