Does Vernon deserve to be in the level of excellence?

Hard thing to do considering the players up there.

Plus the Jays don't often add someone which I love. I have always liked teams who save their honours for the best of the best.

I think his numbers are comparable to that of Joe Carters, but I believe Carter's name is up there because he's Joe fricken Carter and not necessarily because he was a brilliant player.

I think the championship/playoff factor was a biggie in all the names being up there (except Tom Cheek maybe). If Delgado/Halladay make it up there, I think Vernon should be included as well. Otherwise, I would think none of those three will be honored.

Halladay and Delgado will be for sure. No doubt about it. I don't think Vernon Wells will but I don't like him so I am bias. I could see it going either way though.

No - too inconsistent and unreliable in certain years.

People are basing the level of excellence on field performance alone. Vernon Wells was a class act all the way, he deserves to be on the level of excellence based on himself as a human being alone.

As great of a guy he was there is no way he deserves this. I love the guy and enjoyed watching him everyday but he surely doesn't belong on that wall.

Boy this is a tough call. Had he played his whole contract out here, there is no doubt he would have accumulated the numbers to get up there. And his off-field work, and attitude and so on speak for themselves. Normally 3 gold gloves and 3 All-Star games isnt enough for that sort of enshrinement. But arguments could definitely be made FOR and AGAINST it, based on the Jays' relatively short history and Wells being the face of the Jays' offence for many years.

Being a good person shouldn't have anything to do with being added.

Being honoured should be based on talent alone.

No, it shouldn't. This is why organizations have no heart these days. The level of excellence is NOT about on-field performance. It's about how good a representative of the organization you are/were. Vernon Wells was a top-notch person and player for us for many years. He has done enough on the field to pass as a player add, then include him off the field and he's a shoe-in. He deserves it, period.

If being a good person was all it took the Raptors would have retired JYD's number years ago.

The fact is the on field/court performance is what matters.

 You can't be serious. No doubt JYD is a great person but comparing Vernon Wells as a player to JYD is an epic fail. You clearly don't understand the difference.

I think you are making Ozzy's point for him while slamming him for not knowing the difference...

Its got to be about performance. This is a 'professional' baseball team that scouts, drafts, signs, hires, fires, wins and loses based on talent and performance. I don't want Tom Hanks patrolling CF because he's a nice guy, but that Ty Cobb would make the LevOEx on my team is a foregone conclusion.

So we agree, being a nice guy and helping the community is great but it shouldn't and doesn't have a thing to do with being honoured by the team.

Uhhhhh.....na. Reading fail. We agree that if you take JYD as a player, and VDub as a player it's no comparison. Vernon is 10 times the baseball player than JYD as a basketball player. Get it? Got it? Good.
