Bingo !! At least nobody in the East is going to give us anything for free. Oh here NY let us give you 4 million so you can sign Melo because Ronny Turiaf is the missing peice we need. Cmon thats not going to happen. Somehow I dont see Mark Cuban doing that either, but w/e.
$1M, 1 year. End of story.
Teams don't think "Oh I've got to stop the Knicks from getting Melo. Let's all reject their offer and stand together." They think "I need a big man who can do all the dirtywork and I can get him for the vet min price. I better take it right now before the next team takes it." You'd get a deal in an hour. End of story.
toronto didnt trade vince to NY despite the better offer cuz they didnt want so see him lighting up msg and making them look bad, hence they went with the other offer to a lesser known team
most teams will not want to faciliatate a deal that will label them as the people who helped ny land melo
Fortunately you're not trying to trade Turiaf to most teams. You're trading him to one.
And guess what? All the teams know that you only need one team to take a quality defensive center at a great price. Therefore any of them would be the first to take the offer, rather than let their competitor get him.
This "Everybody stand on principle" thing sounds like it could happen in theory, but guess what again? It never happens in negotiations like this in practice.
