Because I dont feel young upcoming assets ie, Landry Fields are worth gifting away for a futile push. A push we will make anyway even without Melo.
It seems you're of the camp that when it comes down to it, you say no to a melo deal because you want to keep Fields? And regardless, the inclusion of Fields is just speculation on our part...there's no telling what the final deal may/will be.
So we Win 48 Games rather than 43, is that worth giving away starters?
Do you want Melo for free? that's what it seems like with your word choice of "gift" and "give away." And note that I specifically mentioned in my post that all my points are made with the caveat that walsh doesn't over-pay in the inevitable deal. And regarding FA, Even if he comes here during FA, we are going to lose current key personnel. And that's assuming the CBA is relatively close to what the current one is now.
We're making the playoffs anyway, we could advance to the 2nd round anyway.....
Does not matter 1 bit. We have an extra playoff series with melo in 2011 as opposed to the first playoff series with melo coming in 2012. We have the opportunity to view shortcomings of Amare+Melo in the level of competition found only in the playoffs and we would have an entire offseason to address accordingly. We can see strengths that can be enhanced and we can see weakness that contenders take advantage of. I'm advocating bringing him earlier to leverage the 2011 playoffs as a means to get these players experienced playing together in the type of competition that arrives only in playoff time. We cannot expect to vault to the levels of boston or orlando or LAL or Dallas who have all had their cores together for significantly longer than we have. And obviously, if we bring melo in, he's going to comprise a cornerstone of our core. Yes, we would gain playoff experience in the 2nd round without melo, but we do it without a future cornerstone of our franchise and we miss an opportunity to get these players accustomed to getting some confidence and chemistry in late April and hopefully into late may, as opposed to just going through the motions and get bumped in the 2nd round.
Patience Patience....
We have more than exceeded our expectations this season. We 're pretty much a lock for the 6th seed and we even have a fair shot to get to the 2nd round. Lets be patient and enjoy the process.
I am not advocating rushing in and doing whatever it takes to acquire melo...that was not my post. I'm advocating bringing this team's core together as early as possible, within a reasonable trade framework.
Worst case scenario...we get melo in FA, there's a lockout through the 2011-2012 season, and the first time melo and stat have a playoff series is 2013. we'd never know what to address until we actually see the combination in action in a playoff context. By the time Amare is 31, in 2014 playoffs, we'll have seen what does and doesn't work and have re-tooled accordingly. Meaning, we'd only start
really contending when amare is 32 in 2015 playoffs, after we've had one season's playoffs under our belts. Again, this is just the worst-case scenario in terms of a full locked out year, but that magnifies what I'm talking about.
