Re: Nuggets, Nets and Blazers
I know that some Blazer fans want to dump Roy and his contract, but I'm not sure that's a view shared by Blazer management. Maybe
The problem with this deal for Portland is that the Blazers are exchanging one bad contract for two. Outlaw's and Petro's. And if the new CBA ratchets roster limits down to 12 from 15, having two dead-weight contracts may be worse then having one. Especially when there may be some type of relief offered teams for a non-performing contract due to a medical issue like Roy's could be.
I don't think the addition of the GS pick is enough to overcome that contract issue from Portland's perspective.

TrOut and Petro aren't "dead-weight", so your 2-is-worse-than-1 argument is hollow. They are healthy and athletic role players. Roy is dead weight because he isn't playing at all. As for relief, you're telling me that multi-billionaire Paul Allen would rather have insurance relief than a top-15 PG, a mid-1st and two quality backups? I find that hard to believe. Most people on the board believe that Roy not even worth expirings, Wiz.
Any other feedback?

LOL. no way. THis is one of the things the owners will threaten but they know the majority of players would hate just so they can concede it. Its also why max contracts are an easy sell to the players union- when such a small percentage of players are affected then its easy for the union to cave on that point.

I'd take a good look at this one for Portland.
I think it's a pretty interesting risk to take for New Jersey.

then why are NJ fans going through all kinds of contortions here to trade them? And who called them "dead weight"?
so your 2-is-worse-than-1 argument is hollow. They are healthy and athletic role players.
it's failure for a fan of a team that has had Outlaw for 6 months to try and justify Outlaw to a fan of a team that had him for 7 years.
and Petro's "role" is that of a player who averages 10 minutes a game for one of the worst teams in the league.

have you actually convinced yourself that Outlaw and Petro are "two quality backups"?

I must have missed it...what expirings was Portland getting in this deal?
Any other feedback?
yes...your arguments aren't persuasive...but then that happens when you call a player like Petro as "quality backup"

I'm still interested in hearing feedback for this one. Agenda42, I appreciate your POV. Any DEN fans on the board that want to weigh in?

Re: Nuggets, Nets and Blazers
Ok, if you're looking for more feedback, I think I have to side with Agenda on this one, that it be a deal the Blazers would have to look at....
I mean, I agree with Wiz that management probably isn't ready to dump Brandon yet. It would be very hard to straight dump a franchise player without giving him a bit more time to see how this plays out. The franchise tag alone makes Roy worth more to Portland than to any other team, who would only see him as an under-producing player (relative to his salary), and not as the franchise changer he once was to Portland. Things like that get remembered and Portland already has a negative free agent draw.
That being said, from a purely business perspective I think this deal makes sense for Portland, perhaps even without the 1st included. I would rather be wasting 7 million a year for 5 years (Outlaw) than 17 million a year for 5 years (Roy), and Petro does fill an immediate need for a big (as expensive as that would be), without costing us a current big player. There is a lot of committed salary, but at the moment I think it would be a very good return at Roy's current value. IMO I think his value will rise once he gets back on the court (I think he will return in better form than people are expecting), but his current value is pretty low and New Jersey could be throwing us a bone here (in terms of Roy's 82 million), and allows us to (potentially) gain cap-space while we still have Aldridge under contract.

Oh, I think Denver has pretty much resigned themselves to a package like that. They might get better value for Billups elsewhere.

Thanks, DBR. Of all of the SGs in the league I could slide in between Anthony and Billups, a healthy Roy would be near the top of my list. I also think that betting on Roy's recovery is a risk that Prokhorov would be inclined to take.
