Why do fans of the big market teams relish Utah's failures?

Post#1 » by dalekjazz » Thu Jan 27, 2011 11:51 pm

Its no secret the Jazz have been struggling the last couple of weeks and Deron has been pouting. Checking the Lakers and Knicks boards it appears the fans of both teams are relishing in Utah's struggles. Even the mods are into it saying they love to see the Jazz lose. Fans of both teams have their eyes on Deron. It appears to me the fans of these big market teams don't have the patience to wait for the team to develop its players and believe that if a small market team spends the time and resources to develop a player the big market team is entitled to that player. I don't think unheralded guys like Paul Milsap or Wesley Matthews would succeed in NY or LA. It sound like fans of these team are jealous because Utah for the most part is able to field a competitive team every year despite not having the resources of the big market teams.

This is baiting. Either answer the question or stay out of the thread.

I am not totally sold on this topic, but I guess we can give it a whirl.

That being said, let's not derail the thread with the Fisher thing. The Lakers and Jazz have longed hated each other before that.

That being said, to the OP. Jazz fans don't like the Lakers and Lakers fans don't like the Jazz. There really isnt much more beyond that.

well, most of your point sounds like its about jealousy towards the jazz success', but you're talking bout the lakers here.

personally, i enjoy their failures because of their treatment of derek fisher...

and other misc. players:

The series between the Warriors and Jazz has been nothing but feel-good stories so far, but unfortunately some fans in Utah had to go and ruin that for us. According to Stephen Jackson and Jason Richardson, Jazz fans crossed the line and subjected both of them to "racial slurs" during Utah's Game 2 victory. Jackson mentioned this when he was asked about the difference between playing in Utah and playing at Oracle Arena:

"Well, we're not hearing racial slurs, we're not hearing people wishing for me to go to jail," Jackson said. "That's the difference for me. I'm loved here in Oakland. I'm John Gotti in Utah."

Jason Richardson confirmed the fact that Jazz fans went to the race card when they were yelling at the Warriors' players:

"That was something new," Richardson said. "It shocked all of us. We weren't expecting that. I mean, (Jazz fans) were trying to get into our heads any way they can, but I couldn't believe anybody would stoop that low. It's nonsense."

While it's not exactly shocking that a couple of idiots in a predominantly white crowd would do something like this, it's certainly disappointing. The Warriors' fans have made themselves a story in these playoffs by passionately supporting their team, and basically willing them to victory at home. It's too bad that the fans in Utah found an uglier way to get themselves into the spotlight.

I think there's something this this topic as well.

I would know because I'm a Cavs fan from Cleveland. I see the worst stuff written about my city.

The only thing I disagree with is the broad generalization that the OP made on every NBA fan of big-market teams. Overall, though, I sense that some fans of certain teams feel entitled to great players if they feel the city they play in is bad.

The reason why our posts were edited was for baiting, which i don't think it was, it's a perfectly valid reason to not like the Jazz/their fanbase.

so you just skip over all the posts about derailing the thread there buddy?

For me, as a Laker fan, I really don't care that much. I like Deron Williams so I don't like to see him struggle. I thought Larry Miller was a scumbag, but he's dead now so who cares. Yeah some of their fans are also scumbags, but which fanbase doesn't have at least a few? Their current failure is more of a mild amusement for me. Right now I'm more worried about the Lakers getting in to shape for the playoffs and crossing my fingers that Blake Griffin doesn't get injured again.

Sounds like you are a fan of the Clippers. I notice you believe Miller was a scumbag. I am interested in your opinion of Donald Sterling.

I know why I personally do not like the Jazz... I do not know if I can answer the question as to why LA and NY exp dislike them but I will give it try.

First and foremost, I dislike Jerry Sloan. I remember Kobe going off on them, and he commented that if he were a different generation or if he was playing somebody would have hit him hard and kept doing it until they had fouled out.

Now I have no issue with hard fouls per say, keeping a player from getting the and 1. I dont even have a big issues if a player is doing something, i.e talking to the bench or dancing, and you want to shut them up.

What I do have an issue with is when a player is doing nothing other then playing well, and you want someone to hit him hard for doing his job, with nothing to gain except a foul and perhaps injuring someone. Thats messed up. Also 1998

The Jazz make good villains on the national stage for a few reasons:

1. They are perennially successful, but not a the highest levels
2. They come from a misunderstood region of the states
3. They play a physical style
4. They have consistency that makes their identity more obvious (e.g., Jerry Sloan)

These things add up to being a good, useful villain for big markets to play against. You can disrespect them without alienating a large portion of any viewership. You can play off of prejudices and stereotypes. You can take pleasure in beating them because they are competitive and physical, but not so competitive that you can't beat them in the end. The Jazz make great villains.
In '03-'04, Jerry Sloan coached the ESPN predicted "worst team of all time" to 42-40.
