Re: Official Raptors 2011 NBA Draft Thread, Part 2
Derrick Williams is going to be like Corliss Williamson. A big 3 who is just a bit undersized to play 4 but can abuse the other 3's in the league.
I think he's going to be a championship calibre 6th man like Corliss Williamson.

Without a doubt the best defensive player in the draft is Chris Singleton this year. He plays SF but can defend 3 positions.

Come draft day we will likely end up with kyrie, 1 of the 2 jones, kanter, sullinger or barnes so start looking into these guys

Those are the current top 6 (which could always change) and some of those guys might not declare so I wouldn't narrow it down just yet. Due BC's weakness for Euro's, Donatas Motiejunas, Jonas Valanciunas and Jan Veesley shouldn't be out of the question
There are a number of guys who may not be on our radar who could play themselves into a top-5 pick come March. IMO this is a pretty deep draft with a lot of potential late in the first. Guys like Jimmer, Chris SIngleton, Kemba Walker, Jordan Hamilton, Tristan Thompson, Brandon Knight, The Morris twins, Selby, Kawhi, Honeycutt from UCLA and Thompkins from Georgia are just a few guys I've seen this year that have impressed me. Our Heat pick could end up being a really good player who is a key part to our future. Throw in a deep top-6 with Irving, the Jones', Sully, Barnes & D-Will and this draft class actually looks pretty strong.

great post -- except I want to say that Honeycutt is terrible and we will not draft a player like him.

thanks- I've only really watched Tyler a few times and one of them was against KU this year when he put up 33 on the Jayhawks so my opinion is skewed. His passing/shooting ability impressed me but the more I think about our current roster, the more I agree with you. I don't see us drafting him but I still include him in the group of guys who could shoot themselves into the late lotto, mid-first come March.

Jonas Valancuinas had a 19 point, 18 rebound game in 21 minutes yesterday in Lithuanian league play yesterday (albeit against a weak opponent). Just keeping the burr under certain saddles, here.

Re: Official Raptors 2011 NBA Draft Thread, Part 2
Jonas would be a great consolation prize if we fall out of the top 4 or so picks. Same with Kanter, I'd be perfectly happy with both of those guys.
1. Irving
2. P Jones
3. T Jones
4. Barnes (might push him ahead of T Jones if he keeps building on his last game)
5. Jonas/Enes
That's pretty much it for me, I'm not really interested in anyone else in this draft. Even with Jonas there's going to be a long developmental path.

I've moved Valanciunas to #2 on my board. So now, it's:
Irving
Valanciunas
Derrick Williams
Yup, that's about right.

I haven't watched Williams yet. Is he really going to be able to play the 3? Or is he just so talented that we try to fit him in?

Re: Official Raptors 2011 NBA Draft Thread, Part 2
^He's just an all-around talent. He projects as more of a 4 than a 3, but his overall game is very intriguing. I think of him as an athletic David West - no, make that a 360'ing, dunking machine version of West.
Good rebounder, physical at the point of contact. He's a good player. At worst, he'll be a valuable glue guy for your team (he's got excellent character). And I've described the best case scenario for him above.

This is the only thread I've been interested in pretty much all season.
Derrick Williams is definitely climbing the ladder especially with all the other players i.e Harrison Barnes flopping big time.
Right now I have
Kyrie Irving
Terrence Jones
Derrick Williams
Kemba Walker
Perry Jones
Jared Sullinger

Re: Official Raptors 2011 NBA Draft Thread, Part 2
This really is the only thread am interested on here, been like that for the jump. It reminds me of the yr Demar fell into our laps. I don't see what use we would have for Derrick Williams. He's not playing the 3 in the NBA, atleast not for long stretches anyway.
I don't think we have that many options this yr in the draft. It has to be...
Kyrie Irving
PJ
TJ
H.barnes
or you trade down for an asset and take a shot at guys like walker, selby, knight ect....

I cant believe alot of people are passing on Harrison Barnes. He is the perfect fit here, obviously if irving is on the board then you take him but if hes gone then you have to take Barnes. Just because he has struggled in his early collegiate career doesnt make him a bust. The guy has a great skill set, he can shoot, pass, handle and defend. Hes got good athletism and a strong nba ready body. Plus hes only 19 years old.
Im salivating at the idea of a Barnes,Derozan wing rotation. Thats a great future duo. Harrison Barnes didnt lose all his skills over night.

What? He can't shoot, can't defend, turns the ball over, doesn't get to the foul line.... you're right he is a perfect raptor!
Harrison Barnes is going to be Marvin Williams all over again.

If you are going to pick someone in the top 3, then he better not be a player who has failed to adjust to a higher level of play. His last game was very encouraging, but I don't think it's smart to use a high pick on a player who hasn't shown fairly strong progression as he moves from level to level. If he starts to put a string of good games together, this concern can be set aside, but not yet. And frankly, DeRozan had the same type of college experience and while we're encouraged by his play of late - though not the last two games - it's not like he's going to be Kobe. He might not even make the Rookie-Soph game for the second year in a row.
