I guess Phil Jackson is not a reasonable coach...
Yeah good catch. Let me rephrase that....Sloan starts players at the 2 that other teams wouldn't/don't. Understandably we don't have many options right now but even when we do, that's been the case.

To be fair, he can only start guys that are on the roster. Aside from last year when Wesley starting coming into his own it's been a long time since picking the starting 2-guard for this team was a no-brainer.
That year when Fisher started so many games, here were Sloan's other options:
Ronnie Brewer (rookie season)
Gordan Giricek
C.J. Miles (19 yrs. old, 2nd season)
Dee Brown (rookie season)

Actually we lost Wes because the front office didn't make a 3-4 million/year offer to a player they really wanted to keep and instead sent him out to establish his "market value". He probably would've taken an early 3-4 million/year offer from the Jazz. I view this as less a financial issue and more a stupidity issue.

We'll never know if that's how it would have played out, but I agree it was probably foolish not to at least put the offer out there. I can understand why the Jazz thought his market value would turn out to be much, much lower than it was, but you have to be over-cautious in that situation, I think.

It seems odd that they only exhibited caution when Matthews was involved: we rushed to sign a max contract with AK, we rushed to bid against ourselves to resign Memo, we resigned Collins to a longer cheaper contract.

It's not that odd actually. The Memo, AK, Millsap and Matthews deals all have something in common: the exhibit a failure by the Jazz front office to accurately gauge the market value of their players.

The Memo extension was an epic misstep.

The Jazz oughtta trade for a pure shooter, someone who can stretch the floor and be relied on to consistently hit the long ball.
I hear Kyle Korver from the Bulls is a pretty deadly sharpshooter. Anybody think the Jazz can swing a deal and acquire him?

Misstep... yes; epic... no.
If that was the biggest mistake moneywise the franchise makes in the next 5-10, I would be okay with it.

I'm not sure I agree with the AK case, for Kirilenko seemed at least a legit close to max player at that time. That said, I think you have a valid point.
I would add to it the Jazz missed some draft choices.... Koufos over Ibaka and Almond over Afflalo comes to mind easily (I'm not taking into account cases like Ginobili who slided to 57th... but hey... the Jazz drafted Quincy Lewis ahead of Kirilenko in this draft.... )

Ellis scores 2 points and still can't win. Very ugly defense in this game.

Unless I'm getting the years on his contract mixed up in my head, we could've afforded to keep Matthews.
