Am I missing something. One of our main men on the board just posted a serious breakdown of teh Suns roster and finances, at least that of it which is public knowledge - anyone who can find that and link here? I'm lost since there's no search function anymore

We're a few mill under the tax threshold, which is around $70m. The actual salary cap is around $59m.

When VC comes off the books, we drop down to around.. $55m ish? So we have circa $5m of capspace to use before arriving at the cap.

We can exceed the cap via trades/ exceptions etc but once we arrive at the tax threshold, that's when it starts costing dollar for dollar.

Where are we finding $12mil to spend? Nash/Dragic/Pietrus/Dudley/Childress/Warrick/Lopez/Gortat/Frye = $49mil.

Assuming we dont trade VC (because what are we going to trade him for), he'll take another cap hit for us of $4mil. Then we have 2 firsts....costing $1.5mil and $1mil. Now we are up to $55mil.

Basically no cap space to work with. Probably $4mil or so + our MLE. Hardly enough to go after anyone potential mindblowing.

Yup... I think your math is correct. Assuming Lawai and Siler are both guaranteed, we will have 11 guys inked, not including Hill. Perhaps Pietrus accepts an offer elsewhere... or... we trade Carter before his buyout deadline. A sign and trade w/Vince would allow us to stretch beyond the cap limit and, I believe still have the MLE for 5mil. But dont quote me on that as these sal cap rules are tricky. The picks ? included in a trade, draft and stash a euro, or .... cha ching.

and actually, the MLE has a cap hold of its full value....so with the suns sitting at $55mil or whatever, they'll either have the rest of their cap space (by renouncing the MLE), or no cap space and the ability to use the MLE.

the NBA does not allow for double dipping when it comes to the cap.

so we as fans can only look forward to using about $5mil to sign FAs this offseason. so looking at guys like Gasol or Nene or West are out of our price range as flat out signings.

I get all that part... good updates BTW...

However, is it still possible to trade Carter's 17 mill deal to a team who signs then trades a free agent ? Something similar to what NY did with Lee.... or even us with Amare ? Sure, we have to pad their coffers with 3 mill to offset VCs buyout, and perhaps kick in a draft pick, but it can produce a pretty large TPE.

I think/hope we still have some flexibility to be active... up to Sarver Kryptonite anyway... the lux tax.

So we really do not have any cap space at all. Pietrus will opt in, no doubt. No way he will turn down 6 million. That just leaves our bi-annual exception, and our Mid-Level Exception.

So much for signing Marc Gasol.

I hope to hell this doesn't mean we flake on resigning grant on the cheap.

"but Sarver, I'll play for the vet minimum!"

"sorry grant, we have nine rotation guys alread- erm.. We can't afford yo-.. Ahh.. How would you like to join the coaching staff??"

Yes, it is possible for a team to S&T a free agent to us for Vince's contract. However, the other team would have to way under the cap to absorb Vince's 18.3mil Salary. I think it's highly unlikely that a team would be willing to sacrifice some of it's capspace in order to help us get a target FA and a big TPE.

The real problem is these rules (soft salary cap, luxury tax, TPE, MLE) are all out the window. Who knows what the next collective bargaining agreement brings ... a hard salary cap, big signing bonuses, releasing under-performing players like in the NFL, etc. Worse yet will we even have a season in 2011/12?
