The only reason I want Melo right now is so we would have a playoff berth guaranteed.

Then why offer Melo an $83 million dollar contract? In my plan they'd be right at the cap level for next year.
Melo -18M
Martin - 16.5M
Billups - 14M
Harrington - 6M
JR Smith - 7M
Nene - 12M
Those #s are a little fuzzy but that's essentially 73M off their cap next year. Surely, they would be in a position to spend a little. To a guy like Green this could be a good deal. He could get a fat contract and be the man. Plus they have some nice pieces in Ty Lawson, Affalo and Bird Man. If they get some draft picks and Gasol or Tyson Chandler that would be about 1,000,000 times better than where Cleveland or Toronto are now.
Play time is over.

they're not getting gasol, nobody is. if you're rebuilding why sign people anyway. you're better off sucking and getting a really good player in the draft who you can build your team around. did you even read the article ? the owner wants to cut salary. they want to sign melo and pretty much no one else.

When did Beaubois prove to be this huge asset again?
Because he has a cute name and looks like a black justin bieber?

Krieger explained why in his article. Compared Melo to Todd Helton who basically was the ONE lone star on a team that was basically on the rebuild. That's Kroenke's model apparently. To have that one star player to "legitimize" your team (and presumably to bring butts in) and keep you kinda in the playoffs but not really willing to spend to try to be a top dog.

exactly. that plan won't work now anyway that the fanbase has sort of turned on melo. i doubt he'd have the same fan support there even if he did decide to stay because they'd know it was just for the money.

OK, but my plan still holds. Just leave out the Donnie Walsh style signing of top free agents after you've created the cap flexibility.
If they trade Melo to Dallas to us or somebody else I'm sure that will just be the first of several shoes to drop. They have some nice pieces that they can dump for expiring contracts plus draft picks i.e. Chauncy and Nene.
If it were my team that's what I'd do.
Play time is over.

^^ I'll add that I don't know that reporter from a hole in the wall. If you were from Denver and you read some of our beat reporters you could get a very distorted view of the Knicks.
Denver tried to get some big names before like Allan Iverson. They have a pretty well constructed team it's just they've been racked with injury, Karl's cancer and being in a very tough conference. It's not just the willingness to spend but the guys have to be available. We of all people should realize that.

When did Beaubois prove to be this huge asset again?
You missed my well constructed argument from before:I think we can beat it. But it's kind of like our trades for the last few years. We were just trading to clear out cap space. Because Dallas can send expiring contracts + take back Harrington's contract that's a big deal. Beaubois is just a backup but it allows them to trade Chauncey who would be a good pick up for someone like the Lakers. So maybe they can do a three way trade where Lakers trade Artest + Shannon Brown to a third team for an expiring contract. Then they let JR Smith expire, Kenyon Martin expire and Nene is expected to opt out. All of a sudden Denver is down to like 10 million in obligations for next year which allows them to resign guys they like i.e. Affalo and go after a free agent like Jeff Green or Wilson Chandler. If they get picks from Dallas or LA (or whoever they trade Chauncey to) then all the better.
+ you add the premium of not doing a deal with NY.
And for Dallas even if they can't resign Melo this Summer they can still extend and trade him to NY for whatever we were prepared to offer Denver i.e. Wilson + AR. Plus they'll make a serious run with Dirk + Melo and JKidd facilitating. A much better run than they could with the current set up.
If Denver clears out all that cap this Summer they could go after Wilson Chandler/Jeff Green + Gasol/Tyson Chandler
1 question I have is... why send Melo and Harrington somewhere for Beaubois and cap space, that you plan to use on Chandler. Why not just trade Melo and Harrington to NY for Chandler, Curry (a better expiring since hes mostly paid), AR, Walker (at least as good prospects as Roddy).
Having Wilson is better than trying to get him to sign as a FA since theyd have his bird rights.

Extra, extra...The Daily Melo...fresh off the presses!!!
Asked if he ever has to go to them when he wants an update, Anthony shook his head.
“It’s not when I feel like it,” he said. “I’m the player. It’s not really when I feel like I want to have a meeting. It’s just when they feel like the time is right (and) they want to sit down – whether bring me up to speed or just let me know what’s going on or get some feedback from me.
“Some of the times we talk it’s not even about the trade. It’s about the team, what we’re doing as a team, as a unit. I think that’s something Masai’s really been putting a lot of effort into, just keeping the lines of communication open. Not just with my situation, but with the team and just what we need to do.”
There are 21 days left until the trade deadline. Anthony said he’s not looking too far into the future.
“My feeling right now is just take it one day at a time,” he said. “One game at a time.”

Wait... is someone really trying to tell us Melo has a frail psyche and will have a bruised ego if rumors aren't saying Walsh will give up everyone for him?

Just what I have been saying. People get hard time to Melo but the fact is that team wants a rebuild and it is understandable Melo does not be a part of that. You need to spend a lot to compete in the league. Just look at Orlando, LA, and Boston. If they are really interested in keeping Melo (and I am not even sure they are), they need to sit down with Melo and put a plan in front of him. They need to extend Nene, make a decision on Billups, and make some trades with their expiring players. Heck even Afflalo may not be back.

Not concerned about Dallas... I'm still worried about Orlando as the dark horse. Melo would probably extend there to play with D. Howard. I think the offer we have to beat is this: Ryan Anderson, J.J. Redick, Jason Richardson and picks. We can easily beat that offer, but that's the team I'll be worried about near the deadline. Especially if the Kroenke's wealthy egos feel the need to spite the Knicks.

Orlando tried, but knew they had no chance, not the players... that is why Otis Smith made the Pho and Was trade. They are out 100%.
I on the other hand think DEN is one good pf away from being right there with LAL, SAS and DAL.Also their cap situation is ok.
If Carmelo would extend they would have $43,908,215 committed to 7 players:
LAWSON
AFFLALO
ANTHONY/BALKMAN
????????/HARRINGTON
NENE/ANDERSON
$44 mil for 7 players
$3,7 mil guaranteed for Billups, if waived after the season
$1,0 mil 2011 first round draft pick
$1,5 3 cap holds
$9,8 mil left (if Cap would be at $60 mil) for a PF FA
For that they could get someone like West(NOH), maybe Zach Randolph or RFA Jeff Green.

Orlando is in even a worse position to deal picks than the Knicks. JJ Reddick is nothing special and Jason Richardson is redundant for them even this year. And like you said, we can easily beat that offer so no real reason to be worried unless Ujiri wants to cut of his nose to spite his face at which point, we should basically be worrying about 28 other teams.

Would suggest you read the article from Kreiger and realize the same model Kroenke used for his other professional sport teams in other leagues.
