Out of curiosity, we're less than $50K over the cap...if we buy murphy out, could the put us under the cap or would his whole contract count on our cap?
I actually didn't know. Just thinking because if we bought him out and it allowed us to get under the cap, some teams may be more inclined to try to trade with us for our ability to take on more salary than we would have when we were over the cap.
Someone feel like clarifying this for me?

Whatever his buyout amount wound up being is what would count against the cap.

So in theory we could buyout Murphy, let him go where he wants and get under the cap. That would allow us to make a trade where we take on more salary and the other team involved would get a big trade exemption?
If that is the case, that opens up more doors for us in my opinion. I need to go back and read up on some capology. There has to be limits even when we're under the cap, but I"m curious how much more salary we can take on if we got under.

Well let's say we buy him out for 2 mill less then his contract, then you have about that amount in cap space if we're only 50K above right now.

Ah ok I think I get it even though I'm still trying to get my head around that. So in Miami's case this past offseason, they were able to do S&T's for Lebron and Bosh because they were that far under the cap that they could take on both players salaries. Then once those were completed, they resigned Wade because they can do that even if they're over the cap because they still had his rights?
That makes sense to me if that is how it went down.
In this case though, I agree it's smarter to do everything we can to trade Murphy. I hate his situation though because he is a class act. Gotta feel a little bad for the guy. Local kid, excited to come back and play in Jersey, only to be screwed by injuries and a coach reluctant to play him. I still don't get Avery though. If healthy, because of Murphy's range we can run an offense almost identical to the one he had in place in Dallas.
Whatever though. We'll know his destiny within the next 3 weeks.

No. They were far enough under the cap to sign all three.

- Suns save money both this and next year
- Magic get a big man for a player who's fallen completely out of their rotation
- Nets trade a player they don't use and one who they shouldn't use for someone who can come right in and shift Outlaw back to the bench (where he will then be able to play his natural position more often given the glut of other wings on the roster)

I don't have a problem with this deal at all, at least from a Nets perspective.
Qrich had one of the best years of his career in Phoenix. Phoenix saves a little cash for the remainder of this season, still clears cap space for the future and has a good shooting vet on a very cheap contract. I think Phoenix will want cash though because they're taking on Q's last 2 years even though he's cheap. Murphy is a little redundant because they have Charlie Frye, but it's only for a few months and he would give them another decent front court player.
Nets, we give up nothing really and get Vince for the rest of the season. No brainer for the Nets. Most importantly, we get Petro out of town. If Morrow can learn how to execute an off the ball screen (I still don't think he understand's this concept), a Harris/Morrow/Vince combination could be fun to watch for the rest of the season. Then we decline Vince's option for next year, letting him sign with a contender or again with us on the cheap if he so chooses.
Orlando adds a big man to help out. I feel they lost a little when they got rid of Gortat and Bass is now out for a little while. Petro isn't great, but there are not other decent big men on the market right now. It depends if they want to pay his last 2 years. They seemed fine with Q's contract so I don't know why they'd have a problem with Petro's.
This is one of the better deals I've seen posted in a while to be honest.
My only concern is that our after the deal our frontcourt only consists of Brook, Favors, Hump, and Outlaw at times (uggg). Might as well give Josh Boone a call to ride the bench in emergency situations the rest of the year.
