Re: [Camelo Thread 14] - Khan trying to get into 3 way deal? p16
So the luxury tax payment is calculated based on the team's roster on the last day of the regular season. So, if Minessotta takes Eddy's deal, that means that Denver would basically saved $13 million in tax payments, in addition to the $3 million in cash left to pay in Eddy's salary. That is a huge, huge development.
"When determining the amount of tax a team owes, the league uses its team salary (see question number 14) on the date of their last regular season game (i.e., if a player is traded away before the end of the season, then none of his salary is taxed), with the following adjustments:
•Any "unlikely bonuses" (see question number 64) that were actually earned are added to the team salary.
•Any "likely bonuses" (see question number 64) that were not earned are subtracted from the team salary.
•Any trade bonuses (see question number 86) for players received in trade after the last season game are added to the team salary.
•Any amounts from settlements of grievances are added to the team salary.
•For players who signed as free agents (i.e., not draft picks), and make less than the two-year minimum salary, the minimum salary for a two-year veteran is used in place of their actual salary.
•For minimum salary players whose salary is partially paid by the league (see question number 11) only the amount paid by the team (the two-year minimum salary) is taxed.
•Teams were given a one-time opportunity to waive one player and exempt his salary from the luxury tax. This is described in detail in question number 18."

That weak package includes 25 million in saving and 2 first rounders that they WILL NOT get in the summer... That doesn't fit the definition of weak if you ask me...
So they should give up Carmelo because they're going to get 2 first rounders? Smh.

I think Denver will cave eventually. Give it time...Donnie isn't going to insult them with an offer.

The total will be: Chandler (who they will have control over) age 23, Walker (who they reportedly like and is also 23), TWENTY FIVE MILLION IN SAVINGS(that they CAN ONLY TAKE ADVANTAGE OF pre-deadline) AND 2 first rounders. Now put it all in context. Melo has made it clear that he will not sign an extension with Demver-so, after you go through that mental process it's not for "they're going to get 2 first rounders" and BTW, what is: "Smh"?

The way I look at it is this is the option for Denver:
A. Chandler, $25 million savings, 1st rounder (maybe 2).
B. Playoff push and then at best TPE.
In my opinion, option B only works if they plan on adding talent around the guys they have there now to make a real push. The money they would make from the playoffs would be significantly less than the $25 million savings they would get from trading Melo at the deadline. Chandler + 1 or 2 first rounders is worth more than the TPE(they are under the cap). Even if they don't want to keep Chandler, they can facilitate a S&T for assets they want. -Jitpal

I don't think you can put it in writing and with Donnie not having a contract for next year, a gentleman's agreement probably wouldn't fly. Plus the new CBA could impact that and render it moot. I don't think it's a real option. -Jitpal

The draft happens before the CBA expires - in June. And picks are sold the night of the draft all the time.

people are kidding themselves if they think we'll only give up chandler. if they want gallo or fields instead we'll give them up in a second. if they want more then one there might be a problem but we're not going to hold this up for just one of them.

This. So tired of fickle fans who start taking players off the trade table just cause of a stretch of good games. If they want Gallo, they can have him, but they're not getting 2 out of Gallo, Chandler, Fields.
I like Gallo's improvements but it amazes me that some people still wouldn't include him in a Melo trade, neglecting the fact that they both play the SAME POSITION.
As for the Minny report, if it's true their willing to absorb salary to facilitate a trade, I propose my original trade again where they take on JR Smith's expiring, and we'll give them AR, Douglas, GS' 2nd rounder, and $3M cash (which pretty much covers JR's costs), in exchange for Ridnour (or Flynn) and Utah or Memphis' 2011.
NY trades: Gallo, Walker, AR, Douglas, Curry/'Buike's expirings, 2014 NY 1st, GS 2012 2nd, $3M cash
NY receives: Melo, Ridnour, Harrington
Minny trades: Ridnour, Utah (or Memphis) 2011 1st
Minny receives: AR, Douglas, JR Smith's expiring, GS 2nd rounder, $3M cash
Denver trades: Melo, Harrington
Denver receives: Gallo, Walker, Curry/Buike's expiring, 2011 Utah/Mem 1st, 2014 NY 1st, and $22M in savings when accounting for luxury tax.

Exactly...
The other piece is- if they keep Melo and other players on the team till the summer. They lose the ability to receive similar "pre-deadline value" for guys like Bill-ups, Smith and even Nene. I mean based on the "Kroenke philosophy" (sign one franchise player and put a supporting cast around said player) I don't see Nene as that player. Now's the time to get maximum value for him as well.

If Dolan derives some sick pleasure from keeping the nattering nabobs in the tabloid press guessing, that's fine. There is no volume of pro-Walsh articles that can dull his appetite for absurd theater. But he should know someone besides Isiah is keeping tabs on this story -- someone who will never be as good as Isiah was on the court, but is sure as hell more valuable now: Anthony himself.
Yes, Melo's motivation for getting out of Denver is to team up with another superstar or two, and if he can do it in New York, all the better. But don't underestimate how tired Anthony became of the dysfunction in Denver's front office. The infighting between Warkentien and Rex Chapman, the meddling of adviser Bret Bearup, the departure of George Karl's strongest ally, Tim Grgurich -- all of it led Anthony to believe the Nuggets would never get out of their own way and become a championship team.
Maybe I'm giving Melo too much credit, but what is he to think if the Knicks are evicting the respected, skilled, no-nonsense executive who built the team back to the point where players like Stoudemire, Anthony and maybe Chris Paul want to come in the first place?
That is a question Dolan, in all his peculiar, stubborn glory, should not want answered.

Rotoworld's take on Rose's statement:
There have been varying reports and sources have been wrong and/or misleading in the past, but we've had the Knicks pegged as his probable destination and it appears the dominoes are falling into place. The key question is whether or not Donnie Walsh wants a happy superstar, which means signing Anthony to the extension he wants, and beating trade offers from the teams that would rent him for the playoffs. We tend to think that if Walsh wants Melo in his future he will want him happy, but if Walsh balks then things could spin out of control.

And if I believe that then I believe that Melo is an idiot... Again, HE WANTS TO WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP. How can he do that with a gutted team? STACKED teams win. Melo has no problem waiting so he can come to a STACKED team instead of a gutted one...

And I'm equally tired of fans who think you win championships with me-first players. There's a reason that Denver's playoff record during Anthony's years was 16-30, whereas Cleveland (who arguably had the weaker supporting cast) was 42-29.
