1. He prefers to bring the heat – In order to thrive in the American League East, you have to load up on power pitchers. At least, that’s the Jays’ mindset as they prepare to declare war on post-season stalwarts Boston and New York.
Early last season, Anthopoulos was overheard discussing the dynamics of “East Coast Baseball” with Padres GM Jed Hoyer (a former front office man for the Red Sox). They both came to the same conclusion: "We talked about how you need pitchers who can get strikeouts and strikes in the strike zone," Anthopoulos said. "All the lineups are really selective and will make you come into the zone. That puts a premium on the ability to get strikes in the strike zone."
2. He covets skill positions – In baseball, the toughest positions to fill are up the middle of the diamond.
3. He builds from the inside out – You will hear this phrase time and time again from the GM himself: young controllable assets. What he’s referring to are draft picks and prospects acquired from other teams, young players whose free-agency years are miles away and thus represent the highest cost/return ratio in all of baseball.
It is Anthopoulos’ plan to create a sustainable flow over talent up through the minors and into the big leagues. Think Tampa Rays in 2008… better yet, think Blue Jays of the late 80s and early 90s.
