Three Things We've Learned About Alex Anthopoulos

Post#1 » by LittleOzzy » Fri Feb 4, 2011 6:02 pm

1. He prefers to bring the heat – In order to thrive in the American League East, you have to load up on power pitchers. At least, that’s the Jays’ mindset as they prepare to declare war on post-season stalwarts Boston and New York.

Early last season, Anthopoulos was overheard discussing the dynamics of “East Coast Baseball” with Padres GM Jed Hoyer (a former front office man for the Red Sox). They both came to the same conclusion: "We talked about how you need pitchers who can get strikeouts and strikes in the strike zone," Anthopoulos said. "All the lineups are really selective and will make you come into the zone. That puts a premium on the ability to get strikes in the strike zone."

2. He covets skill positions – In baseball, the toughest positions to fill are up the middle of the diamond.

3. He builds from the inside out – You will hear this phrase time and time again from the GM himself: young controllable assets. What he’s referring to are draft picks and prospects acquired from other teams, young players whose free-agency years are miles away and thus represent the highest cost/return ratio in all of baseball.

It is Anthopoulos’ plan to create a sustainable flow over talent up through the minors and into the big leagues. Think Tampa Rays in 2008… better yet, think Blue Jays of the late 80s and early 90s.

4. Nobody is untouchable.

AA has shown that he's not afraid to deal anybody (Marcum). At this point I would not be surprised to see any of Hill, Lind or Bautista traded. AA is really committed to his plan.

I still think the basis for the Marcum trade was a no-brainer

A 29 year old pitcher who's had Tommy-J surgery and has likely peaked...for an all-out Charlie Hustle type Canadian prospect with lots of upside

Completely agreed if anything AA likes to stick to his core player and build around them using unimportant assets..

I can't argue that he likely sold high on Marcum but damm, I really liked watching him pitch. One of my favourite Jays ever. It was nice to watch him have such a strong bounce back season.

Nurse is below average at best.
Masai is overrated.

Still think he could have gotten more value than Brett Lawrie for Shawn Marcum, but I guess he really wanted him.

which other team was willing to give up their top prospect for marcum? i doubt much others, brewers are going all-in this season to make something happen before fielder leaves. AA jumped on that situation and made a great move. with Marcum gone, there's an opening for younger arms to step up and learn on the job before we contend hopefully in 2012

Scrappy 2B/3B with a chip on his shoulder like he has so much to prove. Sounds like another second baseman in Boston.

4. If he promises you something, he will make sure his promise is carried out.

Interesting comparison...but at 6 foot/213lbs (baseball-reference) I'd like to think he's got more power

So maybe a blend of Pedroia and David Wright is more appropriate...

What about a slightly bigger Gordon Beckham?
