2011 Offseason- Latest: Jets Cut Cotch, Sign D. Mason
With the loss, our off time officially begins.
Hopefully we can net ourselves a good safety in the draft, and getting Vlad D back next year will also help replace Slauson.
I'd also like to see Joe McKnight get some touches next year - Greene was silent all season and he was explosive in his one start.
Overall this team seems close to being completely rounded, it's a matter of being tired and playing the full game as we saw today.
And remember, J-E-T-S! JETS! JETS! JETS!

Re: Official 2011 Offseason Thread
For me we need to ditch Schottenheimer, Folk and Weatherford. Then we have to draft a good NT, after that I'd re-sign Holmes and Edwards. I don't feel any greed in their hearts so I think they'd take reasonable deals. If not I saw we go in and trade for maybe a WR like hmm Steve Smith? Nah too much.

Re: Official 2011 Offseason Thread
I wouldnt give up on Weatherford just yet, he was one of the best punters during the regular season...he was key in as part in the win we had over PITT in week 15
first thing first we gotta decide on who stays and goes
cant see us keeping Holmes, and Edwards tbh

I think T-Rich is gone to make room for Conner.

I know we're definitely keeping Holmes so I think Edwards is out and Cro too. And Weatherford isn't clutch. He was one of the reasons we lost last night. His punts went nowhere. Heath Evans said a good thing today. He said that the Jets need to focus not just on beating the Pats but beating the AFC. We can't just create teams for teams we have to create teams to dominate the conference. Like how the Steelers have a weak line but a speedy QB you go in and get some fast guys on the ends. And play spy for God Sakes. Noone played spy yesterday at all.

Jets extend offer to CFL wide receiver/return specialist Chad Owens

I hope this doesn't mean the end of Brad Smith.

Not exactly a speed demon, but he looks like he has great elusiveness.

Re: Official 2011 Offseason Thread
The Jets definitely have some tough decisions in front of them but at the end of the day they also have a lot of things to hold their head high. This is a group that comes off two AFCCG appearances in two years, has a developing QB who looks to be a big game player, one of the best offensive lines and one of the best defenses in football. Players will leave, new players will arrive but Tanny, Rex and the organization have shown tremendous ability of getting the most out of this team and forming a contending squad no matter what it takes. Tannenbaum is also great when it comes to the cap so this should bode well for the upcoming personnel decisions.
Free Agency
From the current roster, the biggest names that will become free agents are Holmes, Edwards, Harris, Cromartie and Ellis. The best case scenario would be to bring them all back I guess as all of them have proven to be very valuable to the team. There might be a decision needed between Holmes and Edwards and in that case I would bring Braylon back. He has developed into a big time threat, loves to be a Jet and his talents are just extremely hard to replace. Harris is a defensive signal caller for Rex and I bet he wants him back. But we cant throw out another 8+ million for the hitman after we overpaid for Scott. They are a good duo but also have their shortcomings in terms of coverage and sideline to sideline speed. Cromartie to me is replaceable. Good player, at times dominant but we got good cornerback depth and with a hopefully better pass rush next year we should be fine. Cromartie is a hit or miss player. Ellis should retire a Jet and is still valuable as a pass rusher up front. We also need his leadership and it makes it easier to develop young guys with him still around.
Second tier free agents on the Jets include Pool, E.Smith, B.Smith, Coleman, Hunter and both kickers. Pool and Eric Smith have played much better at the end of the year and might have secured a spot on the team next year. We need Smith as a hybrid LB/S and insurance. Both guys shouldnt be to expansive and at the right price I expect them back. Coleman also should be back as he is a decent third or fourth cornerback and made a lot of plays for us. Great blitzer too. I dont care about either kicker as Folk is just too inconsistent and Weatherford had a horrific postseason. We should definitely bring in some competition.
There are other free agents like Ihedigbo and Robert Turner who should come back at a reasonable price. They are decent depth players and were part of the team during both playoff runs. Tony Richardson most likely wont be back. At some point you gotta hang it up and we have a replacement for him in place with Conner. It has been an awesome career for this guy, no question. Brad Smith to me is replaceable even though he was a great special teamer and had a big part on offense in the wildcat formation. Anyways, you do not overpay for such a player and I think some team will throw some money at him.
In terms of incoming free agents I really dont see the Jets making a huge splash as they got enough of their own players to worry about. But you'll never know with this group. LaMarr Woodley and Tamba Hali at OLB seem like pipedreams as does Haloti Ngata on the DL. There are cheaper options that I could see catching the Jets eyes. Manny Lawson would be perfect for Ryan's system and he would add athletisism and speed to our LB corps. Not much of a pass rusher though. Cullen Jenkins and Marcus Spears are available for the DE position but also have their shortcomings as Jenkins is often injured and Spears is just limited as a player. A very interesting guy would be Paul Solilai, NT from Miami, but also hard to get. Some guys I think are also interesting are Mathias Kiwanuka (Giants) and Jacob Ford (Titans). Both are very versatile players who can get after the quarterback. Plus they are very athletic which we certainly need on the front seven. The cornerback class is very talented but we just cant spend much on another guy back there, we got too many other needs.
On offense I would love to see the Jets go after DeAngelo Williams as a replacement for LT. He is a big time player, comes off a down year due to injury and is the perfect complement to Greene. He might be too expansive but he is the type of playmaker a running team like the Jets need. I also dont trust Greene and McKnight yet to carry the load. Other than that I would like to see a second tight end signed who can catch a pass and maybe another versatlie offensive linemen. Maybe we have to replace one of the wide receivers in which case guys like Lance Moore, James Jones or Malcom Floyd become interesting.
Cuts
It appears as if Jason Taylor and Ladainian Tomlinson are done. They had their moments and gave it all for the Jets but at some point you just cant drag them along. LT might stay exclusively as a third down back and be part of a three RB system. Taylor looked as if he knew that he would be done after the AFCCG and I certainly would love to see a younger guy get his snaps.
Bryan Thomas and Damien Woody would safe the Jets about 8 million dollars if cut. Woody is getting old fast and BT is just average so I dont see how we dont make these moves. Kris Jenkins should be cut too and brought back on an incentive laden deal. Ben Hartsock is a surefire cut aswell as he would safe almost 2 million, crazy when you think about it. Oh and even if it costs money, cut Gholston while we are at it.
Draft options
I wouldnt be surprised to see the Jets move around on draft night as they always do. We have a pick in every round except for the second round due to the Cromartie deal. I expect the Jets to go heavily after defensive players this year, especially for the front seven that just has to get younger. OLB for the first round could be Justin Houston (Georgia), Ryan Kerrigan (Purdue) or Aldon Smith (Missouri). Along the DL they might look at NT Phil Taylor (Baylor), DE Christian Ballard (Iowa) or Cameron Heyward (Ohio State). Cameron Jordan (Cal) who would be perfect seems to be out of reach with his terrific senior bowl. Later round options include Kenrick Ellis (Hampton), Cedric Thornton (Sth. Arkansas) or Muhammad Wilkerson (Temple) among others.
I think after the terrible first half in the Pittsburgh game and the team's year long inability to really create a pass rush without blitzing the Jets will really look to improve the athletisism, speed and pass rush on the front seven. It is definitely the biggest need going into the offseason. Safety is another position that could use an upgrade even though we might be fine there for another year and with better pass rushers. If they look for a safety it will be a rangy, athletic center fielder who will help against tight ends across the middle. Possible guys here would be DeAndre McDaniel (Clemson), Quinton Carter (Oklahoma) or Eric Hagg (Nebraska).
Outlook
As I said in the beginning, the Jets have their needs but a lot of things are looking good. The core of the team is young, we got rising stars and all pro talents at key positions. Over the last two years Rex has shown the ability to bring along young players not only for depth but also as starters (DeVito for example). We will continue to have a good young group of players providing depth for the team with the likes of Pitoitua (who I expect to open some eyes after being injured this year), Dixon, Crable, Tevaseu etc. Another thing I might add is that our QB and HC have shown tremendous ability to win tough games early in their careers. Both are still learning and that should bode well for the future. I'm in favor of having the entire coaching staff back and yes, that includes Brian Schottenheimer. He made mistakes but it would definitely hurt Sanchez development if he has to learn a new system.

Re: Official 2011 Offseason Thread
Damn FM. How long did that take you?
I agree with you for the most part. As much as I want to keep everyone, we have to remember this was an uncapped year and we'll have to let some go for the new CBA. If it came down to Cromartie and one of Holmes or Edwards, I think we should let Cromartie go unless he was true on saying he would do anything to remain a Jet. I see a lot of chemistry between Sanchez and those two wideouts, especially towards the later part of the season. The drawback of letting Cromartie go? I'm not exactly sold on Kyle Wilson...
I'm not as fond as Eric Smith as some other people. He's a great hard hitter, but I don't think much of his coverage. However, I believe our lack of depth at both safety positions makes us keep him.
I 100% agree with you on our kickers.
I'll miss Brad Smith if we lose him. He ran the seminole perfectly and I would've loved to see him throw some more. He was also a solid return man.
I see Taylor gone unless he takes minimum. LT will be back because of his contract and sadly, I believe Gholston will be the same.
Ducasse needs to show something. He's pretty much the reason why we cut Faneca.
If we could restructure Jenkins, I wonder how we would look for an entire season with our front 3 being Ellis, Jenkins, and DeVito.
I don't understand why we carried 4 TEs this season...
As far as Schottenheimer goes, it seems Sanchez plays so much better when he's running no-huddle and he's calling the plays. I wouldn't mind one bit if we let him go (though Rex stated he was staying).

Rex has a history of building up cheap and young players and we have a bunch of them on the roster. I'm really looking forward to what he can do with players like Cody Brown, Shaun Crable, Martin Tevaseu or Jarron Gilbert. Now any contributions from these guys would be suprising but a guy like Brown was a second round pick just two years ago. You never know...

Re: Official 2011 Offseason Thread
So basically the only news today is that apparently when we were at the 3 during AFC game, Wayne Hunter was tipping off plays to the Steelers by his stance.
Also, the strength and conditioning coach resigned after being suspended since Week 7.

Jets looking deeper into CFL, close to signing DE/OLB Garrett McIntyre.
http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=352408
He's 6-3, 270 and ran a 4.83 40 4 or 5 years ago coming out of Fresno State. Last season for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, he recorded 32 tackles and 8 sacks while recovering 2 fumbles playing DE for them.

I really would like him long term. Hopefully, they get a deal done next offseason. Anyone know how much that franchise tag would cost?

Re: Official 2011 Offseason Thread
I read that too. I'd assume about $8M?
Also, Santana Moss is becoming a free agent, he wouldn't be a bad option if we lose one of Braylon or Holmes.

Last year is was about 9.6 million. I guess it is a solid deal and tells us that they really dont want to lose Harris. Remember, when Denver wanted to deal Brandon Marshall they asked for Harris and that was the deal breaker for the Jets.
Now Tannenbaum can completely focus on resigning the other guys...

Re: Official 2011 Offseason Thread
I'm sorry but the Jets have to make a serious push for Lamarr Woodley this offseason. He is the difference maker we need and its at one of our weaker positions; OLB. I know it'd be hard to pry him away from the Steelers but I think he would at least consider us because we have a great situation here with Rex and all.
