KG -

I agree with you about the lineup issue, which is why I think adding Melo, a poor defending ball stopper, as a max free agent

to a team with Amare,

who I love but lets be serious

is not a great idea.

Especially in the upcoming 'hard cap world.'

I think Gallo will be a better player than either Carmelo or Amare in 3 years anyway.

Incarcerated Bob lol

Stop posting about this trade Bob. It's like Bernie Madoff giving us advice on good investments.

That said, I'd probably do Gallo and Chandler with Curry. Preferably keep Randolph for other needs. If Randolph goes in, then try to keep Chandler or Gallo for other needs.

Felton - Douglas
Fields
Melo - Purp
Amar'e
Mozgov - Turiaf

Get it done Bob! ;)

I would agree with that. In a hard cap world, paying Melo & Amare maximum salaries,

two 6'9"ish forwards who are ball stoppers and play a mid range game with spotty, mediocre defense

is a recipe for disaster.

Especially when Danilo Gallinari is very close to being a better offensive player than either one.

This reminds me so much when Boston board was debating giving up all this talent for KG...Hmmm wonder if Boston still regrets that deal?

It's been nearly Forty years guys, let's not quibble...the Knicks are not the Yankees more like the Mets (see resembling colors).

The difference between Landry Fields and Gallo is ceiling. Fields is consistency but he's a 6'7" guard who will never win any defensive awards. He'll never be able to slow down Dwayne Wade. He's just fundamentally sound and that's certainly important on a team where Fields will NEVER be any more than the #5 option. With Gallo, you can't coach height. I NEVER saw Gallo as a shooter. He is a 6'10" 225 man child who can drive in the lane with great athleticism. This is what was promised when the Knicks drafted him. But more importantly, his free throw shooting is what is going to make the defender pay. That will ultimately help him as his shooting becomes more consistent.

Right now, the Knicks are losing against cup cake teams. There is NO GUARANTEE either player will reach their potential.

Well that could be true. I'm more likely to accept that we don't even need Melo than that we should try to team Melo with Gallo somehow, with Amar'e at center.

But it all comes down to Melo's future. Will the trajectory of his career be dominant scorer for a few more years or will he decline some? And can he thrive next to Amar'e? All legit questions.

Remember that people here would have said "Get Marbury at all costs" and nobody would have minded trading cap space and picks for him. So being a GM is about reading the future the best you can. Melo has been a really good player but we wouldn't be getting Melo's past years. We'd be making a bet on his future years.

Wow I just don't see anything resembling "great athleticism" with Gallo's drives. I'd say Gallo is a below average athlete no matter how you look at it. He's skilled -- he can get into the lanes obviously. But it's not athleticism. It's size, skill, ballhandling, etc. Great athletes are great finishers and Gallo is a below average finisher, at best.

Seriously. I love me some Gallo, but people are losing perspective here.

I think Gallo will ultimately have a wider skill base than Melo, but none of those skills will reach Melo's level of impact.

And I'm not even that high on Melo.

It's an interesting debate. In my heart of hearts, I hope that the people here who are high on Gallo are absolutely right about him. If we keep him, I'd love to lose this debate badly, real badly. Like 110% lol.

And it is a good debate. But I just don't see and feel that Gallo is on some path to greatness. It's just not my basketball judgment. But I hope it's wrong if we keep him. I know Gallo is young, but young is just not everything. If it was, every guy with talent who was young would be on his way to NBA stardom and that's of course not how it works.

This is not a Gallo thread but one other practical point on this: I'd much rather Gallo be showing a really superior 3-ball % like 42% or something, than that he's drawing fouls at a high rate so far. Drawing fouls is great and of course, you rather get your points on drives than chucking 3's (see 7SOL).

But, as far as a raw skill set to build on, I think that if Gallo was a really superior 3 point shooter, the rest of his game would fall in place. So far he's shown he's got a nice stroke, hits a decent percentage and can make big ones, but misses a lot of open shots and his % is quite far from great. It's just .368 which is nothing special to be blunt.

It's not HOW he plays but as an indication of his future prospects, a % over 40 would make me think that Gallo could blow up. Gallo will not be a great player unless he becomes an elite shooter because that would force defenders to overplay him.

His drives for fouls are great but I think you'll see that he can't make a living on that. You'll see defenses adjust. He is going to have to learn to make and finish those drives. You can't just keep drawing fouls. You have to be able to finish and keep defenses honest. Gallo can dunk a few early but I don't see him converting many of his drives. It's rare, though getting a little more common lately.

MD is a fool for wanting to base his whole offense on 3's, but I think 3-pt % will more or less give you a good idea of how high Gallo will rise.

First actual Melo to Knicks rumor to date:

Tweet from Broussard:

If we can get Melo for that... call me tickled.
