Mashburn & Jackson score 88 points vs Bulls

Post#1 » by LamarMatic7 » Sun Feb 6, 2011 6:56 pm

Jamal Mashburn and Jim Jackson go on a scoring tear against the Jordanless Chicago Bulls. Mashburn scores his career-high 50 points by over-powering Scottie Pippen in the post, making several and-1s and draining a few threes. 20 of Jamal's points come in the 3rd quarter. Meanwhile Jim Jackson started the game rather quiet, however dropped 23 points on the Bulls during the 4th quarter and overtime with acrobatic lay-ups and by getting to the line. Wayne Larrivee even calls Mashburn's performance "Jordanesque", Johhny "Red" Kerr also notices the similarities. November 12, 1994.

Holy crap! Thanks alot for that! I remember this from my freshman year at UT and being upset that I missed it! I didnt have a schedule and I didn't know they were playing the Bulls that night so I never thought to check WGN to see the game. When I saw Sportscenter early in the morning I was so pissed that I missed the game and I actually could have watched it. This was back when the only time I'd see the Mavs was when they played on WGN, TBS or played the Spurs.

What's amazing is it seems that 80 of those 88 points must have come from the paint or right at the rim. Man, how badly could we use those guys right now? The Three J's could have really been special if not for injuries and poor choice of coaches (Buckerner, Clemons). I know people will say bickering between Kidd and Jackson, but really, that **** would have cleared up if the team was winning.

Seeing Donald Hodge in this video really makes you appreciate what we have in Tyson Chanlder right now, doesn't it?

One of the bright moments in a very dark decade for mavs fans. Mavs forgot that you need some inside players to defend and rebound. Mavs had a good basis for a winning team. In fact, until Perkins, Donaldson, and Tarpley were here, mavs had no inside presence on offense or defense. Aguirre would shove his big caboose in there sometimes, but not consistently. He also yoyoed so much on his weight that he could not be as reliable as we all wanted. Even with that inconsistency, he was a great scorer. Just felt entitled to more and did not have desire on D or rebounding end. As I have been typing here, the word Motor has been popping into my head. If aguirre had the motor of a tarpley, harper, or blackman, this team would have been so much better in those 80s teams. Lets just hope that after dirk calls it a day and moves back to Ger that mavs do not go into another 10 yr funk.

The 3 J's only played like 60 games together right Cat? And when they did didn't they have a pretty decent record?

It looks like they played more together than that. Who know with injuries. Given my top notch research on probasketballreference.com, the following:

48 at least, 51 at most.in 94-95 with Jackson Injury
17 in 95-96 with Mashburn injury. He played 19 games that year
21 at most in 96-97 as nellie was in town and the trading window was open. Kidd gone after 21

that is at most 85 games. As rhyner likes to say, bang to hype way out of whack.

This step back in time has me sad about the foreign draft of 1985 that should have been the Louisiana Purchase. Mavs 3 headed management monster took Schrempf, Wennington, and Blab in that draft. They badly needed a C. If they had changed over to Malone, Dumars, and Hot Rod Williams, they would have had starters for many moons. Try this playoff roster on for size in the past

Harper/Mark Price - Drafted but traded to Cle
Blackman/Dumars
Aguirre/Perkins - Perkins backed up aguirre at times based on his low post offense that motta had in for aguirre.
Malone/Perkins
Donaldson/Hot Rod

The following year mavs would have taken Tarpley with the pick they had acquired. I am lost on who they got pick from, but looks like washington bullets. Toss him into the mix and that is oh so dangerous team

Harper/Mark Price/Brad Davis
Blackman/Dumars
Aguirre/Perkins
Malone/Tarpley
Donaldson/Hot Rod/Tarpley

Even in the 90s would have been strong. Hot Rod and Price were in Cle, Dumars covering Isiahs sorry backside in Det, Malone in Utar, Perkins went to LA, Aguirre to Det, DOnaldson to IR and Seattle. Ah, the past.

Mahburn is an idiot, and/or possibly a racist.

JM: Dallas doesn't have that one guy I would say you could just drop it into. Dirk Nowitzki is basically a 7'0", three-point shooter.

JM: If you poll everybody around the league, and you ask who's the best player on the Dallas Mavericks team, I think everybody would be surprised that people would say Jason Terry because he is a player in the fourth quarter that really steps up.
