Meeting with Leonsis First Week of March

Post#1 » by Induveca » Sat Feb 5, 2011 11:26 pm

For my business , my biz partner and I have a meeting with Leonsis in DC. I'm not foolish enough to talk the Wizards with him initially, but will do so if time is right.

I'll do my best to talk Wizards a bit and relay back to all here if appropriate. I've heard through channels/others he's actually very pissed off with the team and his PR is mostly just that, PR. We shall see.....

Can't really take questions per se, but I'll definitely get a feel for what he *really* thinks about the squad over dinner and drinks. This will be after a good 3-4 hours of negotiating/babbling about business so we'll be ready to talk DC/Wizards/AOL days.

not surprising. take how mad the fans are... then multiply it by a factor of $550,000,000. i'm surprised he's even able to keep enough composure to put on a track suit and make it out to games without having a meltdown.

Ted told a friend of mine in an email conversation that he does not like when people post his responses on online message boards and blogs. He wants some of his personal conversations with fans to remain private.

Just sayin...

Ohhhhhhhh. Well, ok.

Make sure to thank him for being so open about everything. I really feel completely differently about his medical staff after he blogged about them ("yes, gosh darnit, we have a chef and a nutritionist and all that stuff, god! We and every other team in the league have had them for years!!!!"). Hilarious, and insightful -- it really is about young knuckleheads blowing the nutritionist off. If I was Ted I'd be glad the post wrote the article about Wall eating junkfood. There's only so much you can say, you know?

C'mon now, we all know that if Ted were to post anywhere it would be on a CAPS forum.

Ask him what he thinks about the Mercedes ad where Bruce Boudreau and Ryan Zimmerman are syncro-dancing in tracksuits. :D

With all the negative emails he surely gets i would imagine it would get to him after awhile. I am a bit surprised that he is willing to be so accessible with the team playing so bad.

Which board member would it be funniest if it were actually Ted?

AceD, W_T_A, Ji, WizD, hands?

Induveca (I'm having dinner with myself in a couple of weeks)

As his alter ego, JonathanJoseph demonstrates Leonsis' inner dialogue in overcoming reservations about trading Arenas, and no one has more passionately and persistently offered the counterpoints. I'm going with JonathanJoseph, and if it's true, Leonsis' is way to deep for me.

Induveca... as for me, I'd love it if you explained that the Wiz have a ridiculously loyal fan base, many of whom have literally been waiting decades for a glimpse of good management.

I think I can speak for a lot of people on this board when I say that we can have patience with a rebuild as long as THERE IS A PLAN.

Sucking is not a plan. Just giving away assets is not a plan.

To lose games is ok as long as we are trying to build something. To suffer growing pains by allowing young players with high upsides to play and make mistakes is ok. To have high expectations of our tots is ok... to shoe horn them into a coach's system that is a bad fit is not. To retain a GM who has been, at best mediocre, is not ok.

Ernie Grunfeld presided over a pretty good four year stretch for this franchise. For those of us who have suffered through so many years of unrelenting suckitude, those were great years. But, he never was able to build on the core. You might argue that some of his best moves were a matter of blind luck (Gilbert's coin flip, Wall's lotto balls) and some were great short term, but arguably problematic long term (trading for AJ, for example). But, you have to give him credit... while also acknowledging that it is time for someone else to lead the rebuild.

Please let him know that our patience is wearing thin. We, personally, are not in year one with the franchise. We've had the misfortune of seeing this film loop repeat over and over again.

We are happy Uncle Groupon is the new boss... but we insist that he bring in new energy. A GM to hire the next coach and to put together a solid, first-class organization. Never again should a player leave Washington willingly... every aspect of the basketball side of the operation must be first class -- the best coaches, scouts, medical team, private plane, nutritionist, financial counseling, whirlpools, uniforms, ball boys, etc.

I don't know whether Induveca should be saying all that on a first date, but I largely agree as well. Good post.
