The Lakers don't make sense on so many levels. I'm not really worried about that.

What exactly are we afraid of? That really IS the bottom line for questions like this.

Remember how so many reported Bynum for Bosh straight up during last season, please. The guy is 23 and has shown he simply can't stay on the court. For all of his star potential everyone thinks he has, he sure hasn't shown anything to warrant that. Also, he has 15 million coming to him next season and then will expect to get paid the year after. I can't see Denver taking on that contract for next season with the strong chance he walks after next year. Sure, they have Nene and he could walk next year, but they are going to get an injury prone 23 year old straight up for Melo? I don't buy it, neither should you.

unless LA gets a third team involved to take on ~15million in cap space (think: harrington, billups, Kmart) melo isnt going to LA.

As far as an answer to the question goes? YES OF COURSE HE IS.

If we go by the "if he's not able to be a stud on both ends of the ball" then Dwight Howard also is not elite...and somehow I doubt anyone would ever say that.

He's a top 10 player in the NBA. Yes....elite.

yup and many of us have been saying this all along.

it isnt our assets that will be what gets us melo.. it'll be our capspace and expiring contracts that can taking harrington or birdman back that will eventually get us melo.

Haha, all along I thought the Lakers would get involved and work on a Bynum package. Thing is, is it really smart for the Nuggets to trade 'Melo in conference unless it's a much better package?

ESPN reporting (by way of Broussard) Denver has no interest in Artest or Odom.
Although I dont blame them I do find it interesting Denver still believes they're position of power like they have leverage.

Btw the Lakers also traded their 2011 first rounder to the Nets already. So they can't trade their 2012 pick.

That's what you get with a Junior GM and a Junior Owner trying to figure their way out of a box over there.

I'd say he is definitely in the top 10. In no real order, here are 10 of the top guys in the league (add in CP3 when 100% healthy). Is there anyone not on this list who should be in here instead of Melo?

LBJ
Kobe
Melo
DWill
Wade
Durant
Dirk
Dwight
Amare
Griffin

Rose? Pau? Not necessarily instead of... but I now put them in that class of players.

I prefer the tier system myself where

LBJ
Kobe

Are tier 1

Dwight
Wade
Dirk
Durant*

Are tier 1A

And the rest of the guys are tier 2. I find it hard to rank when each gives a skillset that could be more valuable to one team than another.

*Durant could easily move to tier 1 after a great playoffs.

I thought about Rose, but I wouldn't put him there yet, and if I did, it wouldn't be in place of Melo. I had a hard time deciding between Amare, Griffin, and Gasol for the final 2 spots.

I generally prefer the tier system as well. I think that if we're putting an aging Dirk (who is still incredibly efficient because he shoots such a high % from everywhere and gets to the line) in 1A, then folks could probably make a case for putting Melo there, even though he has had a down year.

As for the elite discussion, I think a lot of the disagreement in this thread is in defining where the cutoff is for elite. I initially considered it tier 1 when I opened this thread. The very best of the best. Though thinking about it more, that's basically reserved for the "best player in the league" conversation, which isn't the same as calling someone elite.
